About the Author

Mary Beirne-Smith is associate professor in the Programs in Special Education at The University of Alabama. Her previous experience includes general and special education classroom teaching and public school administration. Her research interests center around academic interventions for students with mild learning disorders who are included in general education classrooms. She is currently involved in implementing a collaborative consultation project with several local education agencies. Mary received her M.Ed. and Ed.D. from the University of Virginia.

Richard E Ittenbach is a biostatistician in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has written numerous articles on the adjustment of persons with mental retardation, young adult development, and issues pertaining to the measurement of mental and special abilities. He received his Ph.D. in Education/School Psychology from the University of Alabama in 1989.

James R. Patton is the executive editor at Pro-Ed and adjunct associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He has experience teaching students with special needs at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. His research interests include curriculum development, life-long learning, instructional methodology, and teaching science. Currently he is developing integrated curricula and life skills programs. Jim earned his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and his M.Ed. and Ed.D. from the University of Virginia.

I used it the other day to remove the front tire and found it had no useful advice. I also wanted to remove the front axle and it looks like I will have to look elsewhere for that information.

Sondheim's 'Sweeney Todd', the lyrics and dialogue (and one song in the Appendix)

Fans of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" who come across this listing need to be aware that this book contains the full script from around the time of the original production, the lyrics, and the original cast list, and the lyrics and surrounding dialogue of one song cut from the original script. However, none of the score or music is given. Any music will have to come from the reader humming the tunes to the lyrics as s/he reads along. There is no foreword or commentary, except the barest hint of a comment in the Appendix, the cut song of "Johanna" sung by Judge Turpin.

But this particular published version is useful for including the tooth-pulling scene in its original narrative context, which the creators cut at the time to tighten Act I. In the original structure, Judge Turpin's song of "Johanna" was to have occurred just after the tooth-pulling scene, but the creators also cut that from the original run as well. The Appendix hints only partly, and very briefly, at the reason for this song being cut, "for reasons of time". 30+ years later, if you read Sondheim's "Finishing the Hat", you will read about the other reason why the song was cut. In Sondheim's eyes, this has to do with director Hal Prince's "surprising prudishness" at what happens with Judge Turpin in the course of the song. This "Johanna" number has since been restored in most, if not all, productions since the mid-1980's, to give the story back the original 3 "Johanna" numbers (i.e. 3 different songs all with the same title). But in this book, this number is placed away from its original narrative context.

Having this book of the musical is very useful for those who want to study the dialogue in a quick manner, without having to jump around a CD or DVD recording.

A positive direction for the series, look forward to a third!

I spent all night reading this and though I don't remember exactly what happened in the first book, I do think that Washington touched on some of the criticisms I had for the first one and improved on it. That being said, I really do like this book but I would gave it a solid 3.5 stars for reasons I'll get into further. The previous book was about a magical being (synfee) called Beatrice Harrow, who comes into her own or starts a journey thereof while befriending a number of characters. A major event that occurred at the end of the first book makes Beatrice an unwanted figure in the human kingdom in this book, continuing from right after the first book ended. She came into power in the synfee kingdom and this book explores the challenges of being a teenage Queen, unseen forces plotting against her, whether or not she can trust those around her and develops some of the relationships with other characters that was set up before.

There are quite a few threads strewn in this book, but a number of them aren't quite explored with enough depth or "time." Namely, this book has poor pacing and the major issues aren't quite given arcs they need to be completely successful on a whole. ***Spoilers warning from here on (side note: I normally don't bother writing in depth reviews of books unless I really loathe them or really like them but want to help the author).

-There's a weird sort of anti-climatic tension where the reader expects that the book would be about Beatrice on the run from the human kingdom, accused as a traitor for killing their King and attempting to kill Hazen, the prince - possibly encountering hostile synfees who want to play on that and dispose of Beatrice from her new throne but it doesn't go there! The issue is resolved quite neatly (or so you think). The upside is that it avoids some of the cliche direction that one would expect but the downside is that it doesn't give enough bulk to the denouement of this aspect. If a whole kingdom is clamoring for a killer/attempted killer and she escapes, there is no way they'd be fine with her coming back to attend their Academy while waiting for a trial...and dropping the whole thing after the trial concludes. The whole plot point regarding this is never mentioned again, missing some opportunities for well rounded villains or grey characters in the human kingdom (for example, a person could have killed her father in revenge for believing she off'd their King. The whole riotous humans who hate her and their group could have been a good thing to establish, a rebellious faction that Hazen has to deal with but it's really mentioned for one chapter and never touched on again).
-Speaking of grey characters, the book never really fleshes out why Leif followed Elias to the end and betrayed Beatrice - setting her up for the whole final showdown. I mean yes, his mind vision speech to Miriam kind of touches on why in that he views no place for a weak/soft person as Beatrice on the throne but it is also insinuated or foreshadowed that he murdered her father. This is never explained quite fully, in that Elias ordered him to do it for the hell of it (being sick and twisted and all) but the driving motivation is weak. There is never any direct confrontation between Leif and Beatrice, thereby robbing any psychological insight into Leif's actions. He is set up to be multi dimensional but ends up being rather one sided - he's an assassin loyal to Elias and played Beatrice because that's what he was expected to do. There's nothing giving any insight to why out of the three brothers, he was loyal to Elias - whether there was any history in his childhood that explains that or something else.
-This brings me to Elias, um...he shows up suddenly and is foreshadowed by Louis the vampire quite shortly. I feel that the pacing between this was too short for the impact it needed. If the truly tainted ones were set up at the beginning, with more sinister encounters that affected the synfee kingdom then there would be that tension that raises the stakes. Instead Beatrice spends a lot of the book "training" which is good because it shows that through hard work and discipline she becomes a stronger fighter but there aren't enough what I would call "mini boss fights or trigger events" (yes too many video games) to show the reader how she is stronger. Instead of a build-up of a journey that gets her to the climax, it's a lull followed by BANG. Though, the twist is worth it - I didn't see it coming for a while and I appreciated the better explored back story about Ashen, Elias and Nareon. Out of all the characters, Nareon is still the most appealing.
-Another issue to do with pacing is that the world building is still tenuous. I find it odd that Beatrice knows absolutely nothing about the world they're in, not even neighboring lands or far off lands. I would assume, at a place called the Academy they teach about world...geography/history...and even in a fantasy world, it's reasonable to assume that there would be explorers or delegates to lands on the same continent. I find it unbelievable that kingdoms don't bother exploring and wouldn't know about nearby conquerors, especially in ones that aren't completely primitive. It's assumed that they only ride horses and fight with medieval weapons and "magic" but hey, Vikings explored and stuffed. But, because of this the sudden introduction of united kingdoms needing to face off a foreign threat comes in too late and the time that would have been needed to pit the issue of dealing with Elias and amassing an army/making peace with neighboring lands something I would have wanted to read about. I think that the material in this book could easily have been separated into two books, had they been stretched out (Beatrice dealing with wrongfully accused of murder while trying to take control of the synfee kingdom, Beatrice dealing with Elias (or unseen threat trying to dispose of her and Beatrice dealing with needing to negotiate with Dom and Louis, maybe convincing people to rally). Dom and Louis are barely developed and there is no back story or who or what the renegades are, their history/culture and their relationship with the synfees.
-Most of the characters aren't developed with enough "personality" aside from maybe Ashen and the three stooges (aka her personal bodyguards). There's an odd, almost awkward tone shift between comedy and ease into sudden ultimate threat. I think Washington has great strength in developing relationships between characters between conservations and light banter, but because the characters themselves lack some depth the impact is lessened. I'll touch on the love "triangle". It was actually kind of hilarious that Harbringer turned out to be married...(I found the mind partner going insane thing interesting, kind of like in Vampire Academy where the shadow kissed partner goes insane) but after that was revealed, he kind of disappears and there's no time really given to what would have been a tragic back story about his wife. I think the Hazen side was good, but could have used slightly more fleshing out.
- Barely developed minor characters: Cereen, Rohan, Flora, Rose, Miriam - they could have used slightly more.

So in conclusion after all my nitpicking, a very good positive is that Beatrice matures. She doesn't give up and she doesn't get fazed out and her personal conflict is that she can never trust others, because she doesn't know whether they truly like her or if it's because of her ability - something I found unique and well developed. From what I remember, it's a strong contrast and the change in her approach after being manipulated isn't really explored with finesse but it does build her progression. She becomes a very likeable character, and the romance subplot was gratifying. Despite the pacing issues and too many plot potentials thrown in and a lack of depth in some areas, I would say that this is one of the more unique and likeable YA fantasy romance books and I read them in bulk so that's saying a lot!

I really enjoyed this book and it would've received a 5 star rating from me (which is what I gave the first book) if it weren't for a few things I thought were kind of irritating.
One of those things was the whole romantic element in this book. In both 'Hereditary' (Book One) and this book, the affections of the MC seem to kind of veer all over the place leading you to think one thing for half the book and then abruptly changing the situation.
Another thing was that, I dislike plots where a person is made out to be quite powerful and then they barely use their power, and never in important times where people's lives are on the line. Like what's the point in your Bender ability or Death ability if you're not going to use them?
Overall though, these were minor annoyances and I still thought this book and series (is it a series when there's only two books?) was definitely worth reading.

One word: AWESOME. I read every day and books like this don't come around often. The last book I read that had this sort of originality and pure addictiveness was Protector of the Small by Tamora Pierce 5 years ago. I have already bought the next one, absolutely can not wait for next weekend to read it!!!!!!!

Super for Elliott wave

As with all Jeff Kennedy's writings, this is excellent. Make no mistake, you have to have an excellent grasp of Elliott Wave to take in the work in this book; this is not for beginners. If one has had a few months experience with Elliott Wave, then this is a book to buy. I have both the Kindle and the hard copy. Get the hard copy. Its much easier to relate the graphs to the text in the book compared with the Kindle version.

Most practical book ever written on elliott wave

I had long standing questions about how analysts of elliott wave international( Jeffery Kennedy and wayne gorman in this case) do there step by step deduction on arriving to a comfortable count and this book just answers that.

Easy to read as less text and more charts with counts. Takes you step by step to arrive at count.

Especially clarifies( live trading examples) on some key text given in Elliott wave principle such as " Ending diagonal in Wave C" how to recognize it and trade it and also I liked the example given on how to trade a triangle? This is very unique and never seen before.

I have been in and out subscriber of their monthly newsletter and I always has this question" How did this guy arrived to this count" as this is shortcoming of their monthly newsletter, they just give the count and don't explain it. This book answers and clarifies logic and reasoning behind arriving at various kinds of count.

A very useful and practical guide to Elliott Wave Trading

While Prechter's book may be the bible for Analysts interested in Wave patterns, Gorman's book addresses the much needed practical guidebook for Traders.
I bought the Kindle edition because the printed book was out of stock soon after release. After having read through the book, I now feel having the printed book and being able to mark it up and make notes on the charts would be far more beneficial than the electronic format.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly to EW traders .

"In the beginning, there was no real plan, just a road trip that became a journey." In the years 1986 and 1987, Keith Carter and his wife, Patricia, visited one hundred small Texas towns with intriguing names like Diddy Waw Diddy, Elysian Fields, and Poetry. Carter created a body of work that evoked the essence of small-town life for many people, including renowned playwright and fellow Texan, Horton Foote. In 1988, Carter published his one town/one picture collection in From Uncertain to Blue, a landmark book that won acclaim both nationally and internationally for the artistry, timelessness, and universal appeal of its images—and established Carter as one of America's most promising fine art photographers.

Now a quarter century after the book's publication, From Uncertain to Blue has been completely re-envisioned and includes a new essay in which Carter describes how the search for photographic subjects in small towns gradually evolved into his first significant work as an artist. He also offers additional insight into his creative process by including some of his original contact sheets. And Patricia Carter gives her own perspective on their journey in her amplified notes about many of the places they visited as they discovered the world of possibilities from Uncertain to Blue.

About the Author
Keith Carter holds the endowed Walles Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and is the recipient of a 2009 Texas Medal of Arts Award and the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He is the author of eleven previous books, including Fireflies, A Certain Alchemy, Holding Venus, Keith Carter Photographs: Twenty-Five Years, Heaven of Animals, Mojo, The Blue Man, and From Uncertain to Blue. Carter’s work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the J. Paul Getty Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the George Eastman House; and the Wittliff Collections’ Southwestern & Mexican Photography Collection.

Good Work Poorly Printed

There's is plenty of good work in the book and the introductions by Carter and Horton Foote are both interesting reads. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst printed books I've seen in a long, long time. I'm uncertain if it's just a few isolated copies or if the entire run is like this, but it pretty much ruins the viewing experience.

Good Idea, Superb Results

Uncertain and Blue are the names of just two of the one hundred small Texas towns having quaint and unusual names which Keith and Pat Carter visited in the late 1980's. This curious photo expedition produced the 80 works depicted in this fine book. The photographs are straightforward B&W images of people, places and animals which are poignant and evocative.

The book's introduction was written by Carter's friend and admirer, the late Oscar-winning screenwriter and playwright Horton Foote (The Trip to Bountiful, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Tender Mercies.)

Carter has published many wonderful photography monographs. I have them all, and still look forward to more.

Classic Americana (or Texana) photographs of small-town life

In 1986, Keith Carter suggested to his wife Pat that they commemorate their tenth wedding anniversary by driving all around Texas, leaving the interstates, "and messing around the back roads and taking pictures." They got out their maps, and for the next summer and over weekends of the following year they visited scads of Texas towns whose names intrigued them, with Pat taking notes and Keith taking pictures of whatever interested them. For this book of photographs shot during their travels, Keith selected, for each of eighty towns, one photograph that for him personified that town. The result is a classic of Americana (or, if you prefer, Texana).

The photographs are all square-format (about 9 x 9 inches). They are sepia-tinged black-and-white. Keith Carter has a marvelous eye. And both he and Pat must have a wonderful way with people to elicit the humanity that is revealed in the twenty-five or so photographs that have people in them.

Among the pictures: chickens strutting under a clothes-line on which a sheet is billowing in the wind; two ancient gas pumps in the middle of weeds in front of an apparently abandoned building in the middle of nowhere; a lushly blooming white morning glory vine completely covering the window of a little frame house; a thin, speckled hunting dog in the foreground, staring at the camera from the middle of a dirt road that stretches back into Kudzu-draped trees; straw bales stacked up in the middle of a field with a bullet-pocked deer target attached to the side of the pile; two sixty-somethings propped against the tailgate of their pick-up truck loaded with melons they have driven fifty miles to sell at this particular country crossroad; about twenty people -- young and old, black and white, men and women -- whitewashing a wooden clapboard church; and a small cemetery with about a dozen tombstones, all inclined in different directions at different angles.

And the names of those Texas towns! Birthright, Bleakwood, Blessing (where I once had a tremendous buffet lunch in a wooden hotel built in 1907), Cut 'N Shoot, Diddy Waw Diddy, Dime Box, Elysian Fields, Frognot, Grit, Old Glory, Pointblank, Sweet Home, Tuxedo, Welcome. And, of course, Uncertain and Blue. (For a few of the "towns", even in 1986 only the name remained. One wonders how many other of these towns have disappeared over the past three decades.)

Enhancing the photographs is a splendid introduction by Horton Foote and equally splendid notes from Pat Carter. The notes are printed at the back of the volume so as not to interfere with viewing the photographs themselves (which are printed one per two-page spread). For about half of the photographs, the only information provided is the name of the town and the county in which it is located. For the other half, Pat Carter adds notes (some stretching to three or four paragraphs) about the town itself or her and Keith's visit there. For example, here is what she writes about Noonday: "The school is defunct and now serves as a community center. Just across the road the Baptist and Methodist churches sit side by side, and it appears that every living soul in Noonday is inside one or the other on this Sunday morning at 10:45 a.m. Keeping score by number of cars it's Baptists 12; Methodists, 8."

FROM UNCERTAIN TO BLUE was the first book of photographs that Keith Carter published (around ten more have followed). It has become a semi-landmark book of photographs. What I have is the original 1988 edition. This second edition was issued by Texas Monthly Press in 2011. From the description provided by Amazon, it appears that both Keith and Pat have contributed additional text to this second edition. People who treasure either small town America or fine photography (or both) should not miss it.
