Without placing too much emphasis (or blame, for that matter) on any operating system or other software product, author Stephen Northcutt explains ways to spot suspicious behavior and deal with it, both automatically and manually.

The case studies, large and small, are the best part of this book. Northcutt opens with a technical brief on the methods used by Kevin Mitnick in his attack upon Tsutomu Shimomura's server. Best IDS book for hands-on implementors

Of the 3 available intrusion detection texts, this is by far the best for someone who actually wants to do intrusion detection. It is breezy & chatty--like sitting down with a good friend (unfortunately, one who doesn't organize his thoughts very well and whose editor was apparently in a hurry).
This is a bits & bytes book; it assumes some knowledge of TCP/IP and security concepts, but it accomodates non-specialists. It is useful for readers of varying levels of familiarity with Internet protocols. Northcutt provides an excellent introduction to the specific mechanisms of the most common network attacks, and offers the most cogent description I've seen of the [purported] Mitnick attack on Shimomura.
I especially enjoyed his efforts at providing neophyte intrusion analysts with political advice. His insight that host-based IDS is technically superior to network-based, but politically impractical is a gem of organizational wisdom.

Readable, intelligent, down-to-earth.

Network Intrusion Detection is rare among technical books - it's comprehensive, accurate, interesting, and intelligent; it's got none of the "filler" chapters which seem to be prevalent in the genre. It's well worth the relatively small investment of time and money required to read and understand it.
The author has "been there, done that" which gives him a perspective unavailable to professional technical authors who write about Java one month, CORBA the next, will be assigned a firewall book next.
This book will be useful to people responsible for intrusion detection, people who manage them, and to people who need to understand attack techniques and the forensic tools needed to detect and document them. Highly recommended; it's in the same class as Cheswick & Bellovin's classic _Firewalls and Internet Security_.

Northcutt hits the ball out of the park!

I am the chief of a 15 person intrusion detection team, with responsibility for centralized, around-the-clock monitoring of a global network. I believe I have enough experience to claim Steven's book is first rate and sorely needed. His reconstruction of a Christmas Eve system compromise and his analysis of Kevin Mitnick's TCP hijack of Tsutomu Shimomura's host are excellent case studies. His coverage of reset scans and other non-standard reconnaissance techniques prompted me to scour my traffic for the same events and write a paper on my findings. I do not agree with some of his conclusions on SYN ACK and reset scans, but his work made me investigate those topics. While I would have preferred slightly more explanation and examples of network traces (who wouldn't?), I hope this book begins a trend of sharing (sanitized) packet-level incident details within the IDS community. I recommended Steven's book to every analyst on my flight and every person in my unit, and I plan to build in-house training around it. I guarantee every person with a technical leaning and a position on the front line of intrusion detection will appreciate Steven's book. See you at SANS Network Security 99

About the Author
Paul Bergman is a Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and a recipient of a University Distinguished Teaching Award. His recent books include Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies (Andrews & McMeel); Trial Advocacy: Inferences, Arguments, Techniques (with Moore and Binder, West Publishing Co.) and Represent Yourself In Court and The Criminal Law Handbook (both with Berman, Nolo). He has also published numerous articles in law journals and regularly gives presentations on how law and lawyers are portrayed in film.

Sara J. Berman received her law degree from UCLA. She is a Professor at the Concord University School of Law, and a founder of the PASS Online Bar Review (www.passlaw.com). She has authored several bar review course texts and legal articles, and has lectured extensively for BarPassers, West Bar Review, and the Practicing Law Institute. She teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, criminal justice, legal writing and analysis, corporations law, and community property law. After some years of chess abstinence, this FIDE Master needs all the help he can get in updating his openings so he doesn't get "caught out" in the latest theory. What Grandmaster Henley does here is continue to weave the net of dynamic Black counter-play based on systems with 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and 3...c5. This first volume focues on White setups involving an early 1.e4 2.d4 or vice versa. This is exactly the type of cohesiveness my openings (especially as Black) lacked in my youth.

As advertised in the title "Crushing White" this book does admittedly have a bias towards achieving results with the Black pieces. Apparently his objective is to show that Black can play strategically sound chess, yet win games in dynamic style. The combination of 64 "Illustrative Games" have plenty of diagrams (over 800) and the "Game Recaps" to really allow you to focus on the key moments.

Worthy of being a pamphlet in it's own right, the "Sniper Manual" provides 30 pages of weapons used by Black players such as - Sniper Investment, Bishop Exchange, Bishop Relocation, Exchange sacrifices, and every piece sacrifice including several stunning Queen sacrifices! In addition, I think he really touches the heart of the typical Sniper middlegame play by showing and guiding us to examples of pawn play - d5 pawn break, e5 pawn break, the e5/d5 pawn duo etc and of course passed pawns.

I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about improving their play. With the combination of the Sniper Weapons Manual and the 64 Illustrative Games,
I think any chess player from USCF 1500 up will significantly improve their understanding of how to win chess games as Black with dynamic counterplay!

Better than I expected !!!

Due to the obligations and responsibilities of full time employment, and family life, it is very difficult for me to find time to keep up with "chess opening theory". However, I love to play chess and am very competitive in everything I do - especially when playing 5 minute or 3 minute chess on the internet.

I tink I may have really found the Holy Grail for my black openings with Grandmaster Henley's - "SNIPER! By building a whole black opening system around the kingside fianchetto, I feel I have a sound position no matter what setup White employs. Henley does a great job of dispelling the myth that only White is allowed to control the opening and win beautiful chess games.

While you do need to learn a few very simple, but important, variations (In the Theory Sections he guides you on which ones to focus on), the main attraction for me was the fact that by learning the "Sniper Manual" I have developed techniques that will - as he calls it - give me "An opening I can play for a lifetime" I am always in familiar territory and the themes are constantly recurring. I feel I'm getting an unfair competitive advantage in blitz games.

From a technical production point of view, I quite like the ease of reading with the figurine notation, highlighted main lines and plenty of diagrams. My only quibble might be from a editing technical point of view as the columns in the table of contents on the left margin are slightly off and there is no index in the back.

However, with 396 pages of top notch content I am willing to accept the trade-off as being well within my favor. In terms of market value, the only other Sniper book I am aware of (Everyman Press) is from 2010 and only 176 pages and more expensive.

I would highly recommend this book for any chess player from Class B (About 1600 USCF) upwards to master level. I can honestly say I'm a skeptic when it comes to most chess books. I've bought more paper weights than truly useful tomes and can say without reservation that this was much better than I expected.

I was looking for a new Black opening system a bit off the beaten track so I bit on GM Henley's Sniper. He seems like a nice enough guy from some of his videos on Youtube. I knew there was a volume 2 in the works. I could see from the "Look Inside" feature that the format wasn't the clearest. I had already done some work on the Accelerated Dragon, but was annoyed by all the anti-Sicilians people throw at you these days. (Karma, I guess, as I have played the Closed Sicilian for a long time.) The Sniper looked like a good way to get around some of those lines. The book has a lot of sales pitch in the first few pages and a very long and hard to follow table of contents. Turns out the table of contents substitutes (poorly) for an index of variations. At the end of the Introduction there is the very revealing "How to Use this book" section, where the author states, "I advise taking the variations you want to employ and store them as games in Chessbase, or other chess Software. As you play new games, win or lose, you should annotate them and store them to build your own personal opening repertoire." I don't mind doing some work checking evaluations and variations with Houdini, but isn't it the author's job to provide a repertoire in an opening manual? It is very difficult to think, "Hey, what does Ron recommend against such and such line?" and then look it up in the book. Also, as one reviewer has noted, some critical lines are given, but are well hidden in the body of the work, which is mostly illustrative games between nontitled players.

By it's very nature the kingside fianchetto can transpose to a lot of openings. Doesn't the fact that the author needs 3 volumes to cover the opening belie the claim of "easy to learn?" It's certainly not easy to say what's covered in each volume without an index of variations. Volume 1 examines transposition to Accelerated Dragon Sicilian (1e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 Nf3 c5 4 Nc3 or 4 c4), the dubious Pterodactyl for Black 4 Nc3 Qa5, and looks at the, critical for White, 4 dc. I would recommend picking up Chess Openings for Black, Explained: A Complete Repertoire (Revised and Updated) for more complete coverage of the Accelerated Dragon, which seemed rather skimpy in CW:TS. OK, I'm a sucker, I admit I shelled out another $22 for volume 2 (wherein we learn there is a third volume in the works.) See my next review there.

Great Book.

Vocations is all about the role of the commoner in Christianity. The first vocation is where Mary Magdalene is told to go out and tell the people that Jesus has risen. This might not seem like a major step, but keep in mind that women in those days a woman’s testimony was rarely accepted in court. In the event where a witness was required, a woman would not be admitted. Perhaps this is the start of the Christian doctrine, in that it did not discriminate between men and women.

The next chapters deal with the ways in which we honor the Lord in our everyday life, through obedience to Christ’s teaching and ethical behavior. One of the best things about this book is its persuasiveness to young people, through the use of contemporary illustration. Rather than showing the idealized stereotypes, it uses stock photos of people in current fashions, so that teenage readers will think they’re reading about themselves.

As with most books from St. Mary’s Press, I found Vocations to be a very enjoyable read.

About the Author
James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home. Michener served on the advisory council to NASA and the International Broadcast Board, which oversees the Voice of America. Among dozens of awards and honors, he received America’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 1977, and an award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 1983 for his commitment to art in America. Michener died in 1997 at the age of ninety.

A Real Heartbreaker!

It's a heartbreaker. A short fictional description of the horrors of the Korean War. Michener, as always, is a superb story teller. BTW, there is a village called Toko-Ri, just outside the gates of Camp Hovey in the 2nd Infantry Division's AO. But Michener's bridges are fiction and have no relationship to the actual village. Somehow Michener uses this one episode of an Air Force pilot to give us a picture of the awesome misery of that war. You don't need to know much else about this tragic event in our history.

"Shared Sacrifice" - true then; true today

"From where do we get such men?" wonders the Admiral after one of his pilots is shot down over Korea. This short story is one of Michener's finest, as he tells the story of a group of pilots flying bombing and close-air-support missions from an aircraft carrier off the Korean coast. While the pilots fly into tremendous flack mission after mission, their admiration and respect is offered to three Navy crewman who form a fledgling Search & Rescue Team who fly daily to bring the downed pilots home.

"The Bridges at Toko-Ri" ranks in the top few of classic war novels, and will explain 'shared sacrifice' in terms everyone can understand.

Aircraft Carriers

It is Michener's sixth book. It is the story of an aircraft carrier and the pilots who fly the jet planes off of them. It takes place during the Korean War (which was not called a war at all, but a military action). I enjoyed the lesson about the workings of this huge ship and the jet planes, and also what the men, both pilots and non-pilots, go through who serve on these great ships. Excellent description of life on a aircraft carrier. Also an explanation of why we were in Korea. Hollywood made a movie of this story. I saw the film and it follows the book closely. However, the book is more detailed, as books usually are.

I was disappointed to find out that this edition did not allow ...

I was disappointed to find out that this edition did not allow me to use the online resources. I ordered it for that exact reason, but gave it two stars because the price was so cheap and they shipped on time. So if you aren't interested in the extra resources, this is a great deal. Especially since we are nursing students with loans piling up. But if you do want them, you are going to have to pay extra on top of the book, which would make it cheaper to buy it direct. The actual book was very general and lacked details, so I used a mental health success book congruently during my class and passed my Hesi with that book. Hope this helps and Good luck with your studies..

Chock-Full of Freudian Psychobabble

The eBook does not include the "Davis PLUS" code, as others had mentioned.

The reason this book ranks so low is that it is garbage. It consistently uses outdated terms and very confusing language to describe relatively straightforward concepts, as well as incorporating a large amount of research derived from Freudian Psychotherapy, a practice that up until this point was roundly rejected in every other psychology class that I've ever taken. For example, this is the explanation of the psychological factors associated with alcoholism and substance abuse:
The psychodynamic approach to the etiology of substance abuse focuses on a punitive superego and fixation at the oral stage of psychosexual development (Sadock & Sadock, 2007). Individuals with punitive superegos turn to alcohol to diminish unconscious anxiety and increase feelings of power and self-worth. Sadock and Sadock (2007) state, “As a form of self-medication, alcohol may be used to control panic, opioids to diminish anger, and amphetamines to alleviate depression” (p. 386)

"Wideband Amplifiers by Peter Staric and Eric Margan is to my knowledge by far the best modern book about this topic and can be highly recommended to anyone who is engaged in the design of such amplifiers. It can be truly called a Standard Book, well worth to be included in the Springer catalogue. A substantial portion of the book contains knowledge only available within the very few companies which play a leading role in this field.

One strength of this book is its comprehensiveness: it is not necessary to refer to other books in order to derive benefits from it, the mathematics required to understand the main part are meticulously explained in its first chapters. The second part of the book deals with the standard peaking circuits and then introduces the socalled „T-Coil" which is essentially a complex transformer. The Good Book for the EE Engineer

Finding a book that addresses a topic from the famous MIT Radiation Laboratory Series feels almost like encountering a new version of the bible. The RL Series has provided firm anchors to analog circuit designers throughout the past six decades and represents as such an almost untouchable set of classic texts. Yet, it was high time for comprehensive updates of these texts to see the light of day. For example, the Valley-Wallman's "Vacuum Tube Amplifiers" has first appeared in 1948. Since that time the transistor has been invented, the computers have become an important engineer's design tool and the engineering practice has resulted in many new insights into the field of electronic amplifiers. Authors Peter Staric and Erik Margan have successfully addressed this challenge with their book "Wideband Amplifiers" published by "2006 Springer" of Netherlands.

Just like the Radiation Lab Series, the content of "Wideband Amplifiers" rests on firm understanding of theoretical underpinnings of topics addressed. And just like the former, the "Wideband Amplifiers" is enriched with engineering guidance, stemming from unmistakable hands-on experience. But what gives this book its special vital value is its match to the world of semiconductors and computers.

As the title "Wideband Amplifiers" suggests, the authors have paid particular attention to bandwidth extending techniques. The inductive peaking has received a thorough analysis, starting with a clever introduction of this powerful technique. The many variations of Bessel, Butterworth and real pole circuits are richly illustrated with time and frequency responses, providing the designer with an important warning to consider both while pursuing either.

The same diagrams display also the uncompensated responses, giving the designer a measure of benefit extracted from increased circuit complexity. Each diagram is accompanied by the actual circuit schematics that would produce the relevant responses. The authors have gone even a step further and have provided the methods for calculation and design of cylindrical T-coils and their coupling coefficients. To the practicing engineer this will be an additional welcome shortcut on the path from theory to implementation. To the analytically minded the mathematical derivations of all responses will open the path to creative experimentation before committing a design to implementation.

The authors have taken a noncommittal stand with respect to frequency and time domain approaches of circuit design. As we have hinted earlier this forces the designer who pursues a response in one domain to pay attention also to the behaviour in the other domain. The Fourier and Laplace transforms, tying together the two domains have received an extravagant treatment in the very first chapter of this book. It is likely the most complete set of analytical tools to be found in a non-mathematics book.

Rather than offloading the forward and inverse transformations to the tables as is commonly done, the authors have not shied away from entering the slippery field of contour integration, integration around poles and other complex mathematical constructs underlying the inverse transformations. Yet, they have tied all these mathematical abstractions to the electrical circuitry and have brought them down to earth with many beautiful illustrations. If one wanted desperately to come up with a missing mathematical tool it would be the implicit convolution. By allowing the transfer of unspecified boundary conditions between domains the implicit convolution greatly expands the usability of transforms. Unfortunately, this powerful technique is not widely publicized.

Having obviously enjoyed the beauty of exact mathematical predictability of passive peaking circuit behaviour, the authors bid farewell to exact calculations in the third chapter. Here the amplification part of the book's title joins the wideband part, which was so thoroughly addressed in the second chapter. The semiconductor cascode amplification and the JFET source follower receive the lion's share of the attention. Special needs of oscilloscope amplifiers are addressed and again reveal the hands-on familiarity with the subject. The knowledge acquired in the second chapter is here well integrated with the active elements and is thoroughly analyzed from the viewpoint of the ultimate goal, i.e., wideband amplification.

In the fourth chapter new options offered by multi-stage amplifiers are addressed. The possibility of cascading unequal stages opens a whole new spectrum of possibilities. The predictability of performance by analytical means is again available and the authors make ample use of it. A systematic positioning of Butterworth and Bessel poles dependent on the number of amplification stages takes up much of the chapter's allocated space. Unlike all known classical texts of this genre, this book provides tables of Butterworth and Bessel poles up to the 10-th order. As was the case in earlier chapters, the authors again carefully allocated equal space to frequency and time domain performance questions.

Chapter 5 starts with an implementation of a seven pole two stage amplifier whose bandwidth has been inductively peaked and optimized for time response. This amplifier and most of the following circuits addressed in this chapter should be an oscilloscope designer's wish-come-true. It would include the design of an input attenuator without the bothersome "hook-effect" and a delightful transition from discrete amplifier implementations to integrated versions. Modern operational amplifiers and a variety of integrated components are used in powerful combinations to meet the needs of an oscilloscope or a number of other electronic test instruments.. Issues like linearity, slew rate, overdrive recovery and even error corrections are addressed in this chapter richly endowed with ideas and circuits.

In the sixth chapter the reader is led from the classical mathematics of linear, time invariant, causal systems to its digital equivalent. Again the frequency and time domains receive full attention but this time within the Matlab environment. As the filtered amplification ideas are being developed they are examined with this powerful digital tool. At the same time the readers are familiarized with ways of casting their own ideas into the language that the Matlab Signal Processing Toolbox can understand.

An important contribution of this chapter is a proposed method, which overcomes the known divergent responses of Fourier transform to temporal step inputs. In the classical analog environment of previous chapters this problem was overcome by the use of Laplace transform. The method developed here is applicable to sampled data only. It is successfully used throughout the chapter for evaluation of time responses obtained from sampled spectral data by means of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. A thorough analysis of errors stemming from the digital nature of signals and from their digital processing is another indicator of the hands-on experience of the authors.

Chapter seven is an implementation of the groundwork developed in chapter 6. The nitty-gritty question of how to get from calculated poles to resistors, capacitors and inductors is addressed here. A rarely encountered analysis of a cascade of an analog and a digital filter is also found in this chapter. Even the complex task of overall optimization of such structures is discussed.

Among other issues addressed, which testify to a thorough familiarity of the authors with the gaps between theoretical and actual performance, of even the best designs, is the question of aliasing. The spurious responses arising from aliasing are vividly illustrated in both time and frequency domain and methods for combating them with windowing are discussed. A proof of authors' successful struggle with aliasing in general, is visible from the beautiful graphs that make the perusal of this book a pleasant experience. But its value to a designer of wide band amplifiers, striving for ultimate performance is unprecedented.

Good qualitative explanations of underlying principles before mathematical treatment. A down to earth writing style attempts, with considerable success, to lift the veil from this often feared part of the `dark art' of analogue design. Highly recommended.

Amazing!!

This is one helluva book!!! the authors really tried to formally explain the subject through mathematical language, in a way that it is useful for the engineer. Im not crazy about the less conventional approach they used to explain the Fourier and Laplace transform, as well as contour integration and residues, however it was a fresh perspective which I certainly enjoyed.

I've heard several times about people complaining that there are no books out there which truly explain the real art of analog design, many analog design books out there are just a collection of magazine articles or application sheets (which are certainly very useful) or covering ubiquitous material which could be found by a simple google search leading to an amateur electronics forum, well this is it, this is as close as it gets to learning the real art of analog design (at least when it comes to amplifiers), not just by proven methods but also through the use of a solid mathematical theory which most advanced undergraduates or graduates could follow.

The book starts from the basics of complex theory, Laplace transforms and basic systems/control theory which is applied throughout the book, it then provides useful tools such as peaking circuits and then fully covers the topic of wideband amplifier design.

The authors use a somehow informal method of writting without becoming excessively pedestrian, it is a true joy reading this book.

Trevor Herbert is Professor of Music at the Open University of the UK. Before entering academic life he played trombone with London's principal orchestras and period instrument groups. He has published widely in academic books, journals, reference works and more popular media. He has broadcast extensively on BBC radio and television.

Good source for students

I was very impressed with this book, and made it a required text for my seminar this semester. The material is very up to date and very readable, and it includes explanations and suggestions for the entire process of researching and writing a term or research paper.

Style guide

This is a style guide for scholarly writing about music. It goes into many areas not covered by the big-selling style guides, which makes it uniquely valuable. Like other style guides, it is often arbitrary, but perhaps it will succeed in bringing some uniformity to the field. I didn't agree with all the author's advice, and some of it seemed supererogatory, such as how to tell upper case from lower case. I know, music education is highly specialized. Maybe for fine performers who are not very comfortable with English, this will be just what is needed.
