About the Author
W. Steve Albrecht is the Andersen Alumni Professor of Accountancy in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from BYU and MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Dr. Chad O. Albrecht, assistant professor at Utah State University, received his PhD from ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and currently teaches forensic accounting and ethics. His research focuses on international fraud and corruption from a humanistic perspective. His research articles have appeared in numerous journals and have been quoted in multiple news outlets. Previous to his doctoral studies, Dr. Albrecht worked as a licensed stockbroker for the Bank of Montreal. He currently serves as associate editor of Cross Cultural Management: An International Journal, a peer-review journal by Emerald Publishing.

Dr. Conan C. Albrecht, associate professor of Information Systems at Brigham Young University, teaches enterprise development, middleware, and business programming. Dr. Albrecht researches computer-based fraud detection techniques, e-commerce platforms, and online group dynamics. He has published several articles on fraud detection and information theory in numerous academic and professional outlets. He is currently developing an open source framework for computer-based fraud detection. The core of this research is detectlets, which encode background and detection information for specific fraud schemes. He hopes the system will eventually serve as the foundation of a large, online repository of detectlets about all types of fraud in the next few years.

Dr. Mark F. Zimbelman is an accounting professor and Selvoy J. Boyer Fellow at Brigham Young University (BYU). He teaches classes on auditing and fraud examination and focuses his research exclusively on fraud. His research has been published in numerous academic journals and he has worked with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors in writing various publications on fraud. Dr. Zimbelman received his CPA license and worked for more than six years as a financial statement auditor and, later, as a controller in industry. After obtaining his PhD he worked with KPMG in their fraud and forensics practice. This opportunity provided hands-on experience investigating violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, financial statement fraud, vendor fraud, and embezzlement.

Great book for students in accounting.

As soon as I started reading this book, I had no problems keeping up with the assigned readings in my class. The examples of what people will do to decieve others and themselves are gut wrenching, but give a true picture of what people do. This book has made me consider specializing in fraud.

Student friendly and well-written

This book is a very thorough and well-written introduction to the field of fraud examination. Authors' lucid and easy-to-read style with plenty of fraud story examples is helpful to digest complex concepts such as financial statement frauds and e-commerce frauds. Chapter sizes are carefully kept small. Quizzes and case studies are also well-thought out.

Some reviews on Amazon don't do this book a justice. Overall a comprehensive text book in the area of Fraud examination. For curious and interested in this field, I also recommend Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports, Second Edition.

Pretty Decent

The book is relatively well written with easily understood concepts. The massive amount of examples are tremendously helpful in bridging the gap between theoretical academics and real life fraud as well as making the reader think about fraud in different ways. For example, one case is about a normal inventory audit, except that the company was trying to pull a fast one by overstating their inventory. What the auditors did was to check the weight and size of the inventory that was on the books and compare it to the warehouse size and capacity of their forklifts. The two did not match as the warehouse was too small to fit all of the inventory and the weights of the products were far in excess of what a forklift could lift.

The main issue and this was already brought up was redundancy. The book tends to do through out the book. I haven't quite figured it out if its meant to reinforce specific concepts or if their editor was just incompetent.

The book is still useful for those who haven't taken audit and useful for those who have as it either lays some knowledge for audit courses or reinforces audit knowledge.

Anthony J. Strelkauskas, PhD
After earning a PhD from the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago, Tony Strelkauskas completed postdoctoral research at the Sidney Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, before becoming a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he taught immunology and microbiology to medical students. He is now the lead instructor for the microbiology course at Trident Technical College, Charleston, South Carolina, where his students have repeatedly nominated him for the Who's Who Among American Teachers.

Jennifer E. Strelkauskas, DVM
Jennifer Strelkauskas is pictured here with a 6 day old baby Alpaca (called a Cria) after giving the newborn its first examination. She earned her DVM from Auburn University, Alabama, and is currently practicing veterinary medicine in Hood River, Oregon.

Some parts are just plain WRONG...

I chose this book to teach a new course on subjects I know well. Overall, I like the idea of it, but I have not relied on it for preparing my lectures since I have lectures on the same material based on other texts. Tonight while updating a lecture on Innate Immunity to utilize the figures in this text, I found that some things are simply wrong, including activation of complement via the alternative pathway, and the functions of basophils and mast cells seem to miss the most relevant functions of these cells. Also, in an earlier chapter Acid-fast bacteria are described as if they are a subset of Gram-positive bacteria, and their importance is minimized by this interpretation. I'm also finding myself seeking illustrations from other texts. While there is an OK amount of photos & tables, the text is short on figures that help students visualize more complex processes. I gave the book 3 stars because I don't feel it is fair to condemn the entire book based on a few errors/differences of opinions, but to my fellow instructors I urge caution and careful examination before adopting this text.

Update, during text's 2nd use:
I want to like this book, so I've decided to give it another chance. This time around I decided to follow- or at least TRY to follow the text more closely in my lectures, and it is not going well at all. I imagine the students think I am scattered and presenting them with redundant material. For instance, bacterial cell walls & capsules are first introduced in Chpt 4, then capsules are mentioned again in Chpt 5 as being a way bacteria avoid host defenses, then are FINALLY really explained in Chpt 9; the authors also wait all the way until Chpt 9 to discuss the composition & importance of bacterial cell. There has got to be an easier way, and there is in many other micro books. Plus, I've found additional blatant errors. I'll continue to look for a new text for this course; though easy to read this one is really difficult to teach from.

Best science textbook I have ever read

This book has now become my gold standard for science textbooks. It is a pleasure to read and the online resource for the book is a great complement and very intuitive. Prior to Micro, I hadn't had a college science class since 1983 and even then, it was only one class. I was a bit apprehensive about this course but the book couldn't be better. I aced the class and loved the subject. Both were a pleasant surprise for me, and I credit this excellent text.

Microbiology: A Clinical Approach is a useful new text book. The authors use three questions to help understand the vast range of medical microbiology topics. These are centred on:

a) Why do I need to know this?
b) Why is this important?
c) What do I need to know?

These questions challenge the reader across each of the twenty-eight chapters, which include microbial function and diseases mechanisms, host defence, control and treatment of infection, biotechnology, and bioterrorism.

The chapters focus on learning and there are useful color coded sections on `fast facts' as well as `important points to keep in mind'. The book is extensively illustrated throughout with photographs and easy to use schematics. To aid students, each chapter has a multiple choice section.

The book is also supported by a website which includes an E-tutor module and on-line videos.

You Get What You Pay For

I won't even call this a book. It is the first 12 chapters of a book and not even enough character or story development to make me to read the rest let alone buy the rest. There is no resolution of any sort at the end. Usually a series has an ending of one part of a story and you like that story and the characters so much you want to read what happens next to them. I am still seeking justice for those killed in the plane wreck because all this book did was let you know there was a crime which you get in the title and synopsis. So read those two things and you have read this book.

Screaming Cliffhanger :( It's a Trilogy not a series

Screaming Cliffhanger :( Yea I hate cliffhangers. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It's only 12 Chapters of a book. I don't really see how it can be drawn out much more the end of this book tells you WHO ordered the hit....I guess book's 2 and 3 could be about knocking off her son and daughter too who know's. I will NOT be buying any of these books to find out. I hate wasting my time on books like this.

Nowhere in her book description does it say this is a trilogy....She call's it a series...This is not a series it's book 1 of a trilogy.

One is enough

So far, I'm the only reader who didn't like this book. I didn't realize, my own fault, that it's a three parter. But there was nothing that made me want to read the next two. I found the non-American spelling of some words to be disconcerting and, seriously, who replaces the expression "wild goose chase" with "goose-hunters"?

Dr. Gurpreet Dhillon is Professor of Information Systems in the School of Business, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, USA. He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. His research interests include management of information security, ethical and legal implications of information technology. His research has been published in several journals including Journal of Management Information Systems, Information Systems Research, Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal Information & Management, Communications of the ACM, Computers & Security, and International Journal of Information Management among others. A Symbolist Masterpiece

Petersburg was originally published between 1913 and 1914 in installments by Sirin in its literary miscellany of the same name, and then in book form in 1916. Obviously dissatisfied with the first edition, Bely began revising it almost immediately, but during the revolutionary and civil war period, he could find no one interested in publishing a revised second edition. Bely emigrated to Berlin temporarily, where he found a publisher, and made massive cuts to the novel. The revised novel was published in 1922 (the authoritative text for this translation), and was reprinted in the Soviet Union in 1928 with minor changes made by Bely and extensive modifications made by the Soviet censors. The 1928 edition was reprinted in 1935, but with the growing demand that literature conform to the standards of Socialist Realism, Petersburg was virtually ignored until, with the gradual easing of restrictions after Stalin's death, it regained a certain respectability.

The novel takes place over a short period of time in the autumn of 1905. Although Russian cultural activity was gaining more and more prominence on an international scale, political and social unrest were on the rise domestically. Demand for reform was rampant, and even outright revolution was being advocated in some circles. Commencing in January 1905, a series of strikes, assassinations, and uprisings had occurred. The widespread feeling among the populace that the old values were inadequate for a burgeoning modernity, and that Russia was teetering on the edge of an abyss, becomes apparent early in the novel in this beautifully poetic passage:

From the fecund time when the metallic Horseman had galloped hither, when he had flung his steed upon the Finnish granite, Russia was divided in two. Divided in two as well were the destinies of the fatherland. Suffering and weeping, Russia was divided in two, until the final hour.

Russia, you are like a steed! Your two front hooves have leaped far off into the darkness, into the void, while your two rear hooves are firmly implanted in the granite soil. (64)

As Maguire and Malmstad note, this prophetic meditation on Russia's destiny is similar to several lines in Pushkin's poem, The Bronze Horseman. Both Bely and Pushkin raise the issue stemming from Peter the Great's Westernizing innovations: had Peter's western influences detached Russia from her native traditions and divided her in two, the peasants on the one hand and the Westernized elite on the other, setting her on an unknown course that would eventually lead to destruction?

The plot is rather simple, a political thriller paced by a ticking time bomb that Nikolai Apollonovich Ableukhov, a university student who has become entangled in a revolutionary terrorist organization, agrees to plant in his father's house, the senator, Apollon Apollonovich Ableukhov. Underlying the apparent simplicity, however, is a very complex text with intricately woven plots and subplots on many levels. Petersburg is suspenseful, socially relevant, political, psychological, philosophical, and historical, and loose ends come together in the myriad of characters who populate the novel, ranging from the powerful and privileged to the poor and discontented, through whom Bely paints a vivid picture of Petersburg society. There are double agents, terrorists, journalists, secret police, government officials, and society people. Peter the Great is himself evoked through the images of the Bronze Horseman and the Flying Dutchman. Many characters confront a personal crisis: the family crisis triggered by his wife's flight to Spain with her Italian lover in the case of the senator; the love crisis of his son, Nikolai Apollonovich, as a result of his broken relationship with Sofia Petrovna; and the consciousness crises experienced by both Nikolai, who has rejected Kant, and Dudkin, who has become disillusioned with Nietzsche, each searching for a new meaning in life. These personal crises are intensified by, and representative of, the real social, political and governmental crises within Russia herself.

As a paradigm of Russian Symbolism, with no omniscient narrator, Bely demands that his readers be attentive, astute, and perceptive. Using synecdoche as a mode of expression, Bely often will not provide an image as a whole-we see a piece of attire, a prominent feature, a segment:

Rolling toward them down the street were many-thousand swarms of bowlers. Rolling toward them were top hats, and the froth of ostrich feathers.

Noses sprang out from everywhere. (178)

Earlier in the novel, Bely depicts another crowd scene:

Contemplating the flowing silhouettes, Apollon Apollonovich likened them to shining dots. One of these dots broke loose from its orbit and hurtled at him with dizzying speed, taking the form of an immense crimson sphere-
-among the bowlers on the corner, he caught sight of a pair of eyes. And the eyes expressed the inadmissible. They recognized the senator, and, having recognized him, they grew rabid, dilated, lit up, and flashed. (14)

The present is chaos, precariously moving on an apocalyptic path. Apollon Apollonovich recognizes the chaos and sees the crowd in fragments because of his sense of isolation and vulnerability in a Russia at the brink of radical change. The dots and spheres also form a leitmotif through which the apocalyptic themes of the novel are presented. The sphere is crimson, a color associated with revolution and danger. An ominous feeling, together with a sense of apprehension and disorientation, permeates the novel. The sense of insecurity we experience as we read through the novel parallels the sense of insecurity the inhabitants of 1905 Petersburg must have endured.

Wonderful. The best novel I have read. Period.

A strangly comical story about the chaos and absurdity of Russian life and politics circa 1905. It tells the story of a Russian family at odds with itself. The main characters are an aristocratic father, his politically rebellious son, the estranged wife, a back-stabbing political party, the "Red Domino", and a ticking bomb....!!! Warning: The prose is somewhat a slow read as it takes time to get used to the Symbolists style of writing. If you can get through the first 30 pages you won't regret it. This book has not been called the best Novel of the 20th century for nothing !!!

One of the greatest masterpieces of 20th-century prose

According to Vladimir Nabokov, this work rates with Joyce's Ulysses and Kafka's Transformations. I'll take this one over its competition. One of the most well-read works of Russia's Silver Age, I recommend it not only as literature but also as cultural history. PLEASE, find an edition of the Maguire and Malmstad translation, it's much more lucid. Bely is difficult enough even if you read Russian; you need all the help in translation you can get. The notes are copious but, if read attentively, help place the book in the cultural context in which it was written.

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). A Collateral Attraction was originally titled Collateral when it was first serialized on Wattpad where it was chosen as one of the top 5 romances to read by RT Book Reviews (August 2015). � I've always been interested in sibling dynamics, especially between twins and wanted write something that dealt heavily on chick-lit and women's fiction elements along with romantic suspense and mystery.

Liz Madrid was born in the Philippines and studied journalism in college before realizing she preferred writing romantic fiction over news and ad copy. �When she's not writing her books, she runs a private massage therapy practice in the South Bay. �She lives in Southern California with her family, a Chihuahua and way too many books.

Collateral...

There's family dysfunction on both sides of this love story. On one side, twins with long, seething resentments and one big secret. On the other, family secrets and the fate of a billion dollar company throws the offspring into a dangerous tizzy. As the characters collide and often spar, a number of issues are raised: adultery, betrayal, loyalty to family.

Blythe becomes a nightmare of a twin sister, making life hell for her twin Billie and herself. Heath, the billionaire brother of Blythe's love interest, becomes an unlikely ally and a willing hero.

Billie and Heath are perfect for each other. Denying love and attraction is never is never fun but Billie and Heath do just that...until they don't. Much of this story's charm comes from the full tangibility of the characters' feelings - the heights of their joy, the depths of their disappointments. Liz Madrid Carefully perceives the nuances of human Interaction, especially with those in love. Those tiny moments of truth feel honest and clear.

Read this one and enjoy.

A Great Blend of Romance and Suspense

No matter what your status is in life you can't choose your family and A Collateral Attraction does a masterful job of portraying that.

I wasn't sure of what to expect at the start but as the story went on I found there was more here than straight romance which is a credit to Ms. Durano's writing.

I felt for all of the characters (even Blythe) because of the circumstances. It was good to see how they overcame the obstacles and made for dynamic characters.

An evolved plot and realistic character portrayals along with romance and suspense? What more can a reader ask for?

This gets a solid four stars from me.

Truly an exciting and fantastic read!!

What an incredibly exciting and fast paced story this was! I was intrigued by this being a story about identical twins that seemed to be polar opposites of each other. When the quiet one was taken and thought to be the more flamboyant twin, it only got more exciting. I was able to read this in it's developing stages on Wattpad, and I am so excited that it has been published! This story had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. When you add brothers as love interests for both girls, it only gets better. This truly is an exceptionally great read and I thoroughly recommend it as she did an outstanding job of writing this. Fantastic story!!!!
