Carlson has terrific Neurosicence text
By Wolfe
I've used Carlson's Neuroscience books for years and find this to be an excellent up to date Behavioral Neuroscience foundation with clear interesting chapters. Love the use of clinical cases at the beginning and end of chapter to pique reader's interest as in a mystery novel. It has terrific image quality and great links to media in MyPsychkit companion. I commend the author on keeping the book manageable for a one semester course in light of this rapidly expanding technical field.

DONT ORDER FROM AMAZON!
By megana
If you need the book edition that comes with "mypsychkit" do not order from here, its very misleading and says its "(MyPsychKit Series)", but DOES NOT include any access to mypsychkit online. I ordered this book assuming it was the right edition I needed because of the title and did not find out until class started, that I had to pay an extra $35 for access! Your best bet is to buy the package from the Pearson website, its the same price and a lot LESS HASSLE! Whoever typed the title is clearly a moron, because this is definitely NOT the same edition! Conveniently there's no way to contact amazon unless I want a refund, and now its too late to wait on the real book to be shipped!

UPDATE: I feel the need to update this as I have had two review nazis leaving negative comments, when I purchased and left this review it was in 2010...since then they have obviously changed the description of the text (so it no longer says it includes "mypsych kit" anymore, as it did when I ordered it and the description was wrong) Amazon thankfully refunded me $35 of my purchase to cover the costs of having to buy "mypsych kit" from the Pearson website since they were in fact at fault. It was my first experience buying from amazon and unfortunately was a very negative one, I have since bought hundreds of things from amazon with no problem. The amazon associate was very helpful and understanding of my frustration at the time and informed me that they were in fact wrong and would work on changing the description to make it accurate. Unfortunately this was not done and completely resolved until after I had left my review, it was posted not to down amazon/the publisher/the book etc...as others have suggested (I actually suggested ordering it straight form Pearson) but was posted to save any future students/customers from going through the hassle that I had to...with that being said, all is well and seems to be correct now and having been an a loyal amazon customer since, I would definitely recommend buying from them.

As far as the book actually goes, its neuroscience, so its not exactly cake as workload is concerned, but the text /layout of the book was very well done. It reminded me of a biology book you'd have in high school (pertaining to layout and ease of reading only). I could easily find exactly what I was looking for in the book when I needed it and the text was broken down in a way that made the complex content easily understandable! Would recommend this book! I only wish my class had been organized in the same manner! haha

Not as thorough as I would have liked
By Amazon Customer
This textbook covered a lot of material, but was not as thorough as I would have liked for the course it was used for. I found it to stop short on many points and seemed to just skim the surface when it should have gone much deeper to give a clearer picture. If I had to choose to a textbook I think I would search a little further than this publication for my students.

Life, Death, and Airplanes: A Memoir, by Larry Klos

Life, Death, and Airplanes is a memoir covering a portion of the author's life. Larry Klos lived as a child in a family with airplanes and as an adult has been a light aircraft pilot. He retired after a long career in the aircraft industry. Aircraft have always been part of his life and changed his life, most notably when a light aircraft crash killed his family, leaving him as the sole survivor. The memoir shares the details of his life as it was affected by aviation, and by the fact that he has an introverted personality type. Although introversion can be a strength as well as a weakness, in both cases it affects the way introverts approach the world and their relationships with others. The intersections of introversion and aviation are constant threads of thought in the narrative. All of us face our own difficulties and traumas as we move through life. The story is sad, but hopefully inspiring, showing how one person survived to live a fulfilled life despite difficult situations.

A captivating Listen
By Some guy on the web
I listened to this while commuting to and from work over the course of about a week. There were several "driveway moments" where I didn't want to stop listening. The action continuously moves forward, but the real meat of this [audio]book is in the conversations where seemingly regular people share profound insights into our society and history. It may seem funny to call it "inspirational" since it is very critical of the mainstream common perceptions of how things work--maybe "bracing" is a better term.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of a perfect 5 is that the author is not a professional narrator, so the different characters are sometimes hard to distinguish. Also, a minor structural quibble for naming two different characters with similar names: Josh and Jason, which is probably less a problem in print than in spoken/audio where my mind jumps ahead, and mixes up the characters.

The Woman Who Waited, by ANDREI MAKINE

A moving, utterly captivating love story: Romeo and Juliet as if told by Chekhov or Dostoevsky. In the remote Russian village of Mirnoje a woman waits, as she has waited for almost three decades, for the man she loves to return. Near the end of World War II, 19-year-old Boris Koptek leaves the village to join the Russian army, swearing to the 16-year-old love of his life, Vera, that as soon as he returns they will marry. Young Boris, who with his engineering battalion fights his way almost to Berlin, is reported killed in action crossing the Spree River. But Vera refuses to believe he is dead, and each day, all these years later, faithfully awaits his return. Then one day the narrator arrives in the village, a 26-year-old native of Leningrad who is fascinated by both the still-beautiful woman and her exemplary story, and little by little falls madly in love with her. But how can he compete with a ghost that will not die?Beautifully, delicately, but always powerfully told, Andre• Makine delineates in masterly prose the movements and madness that constitute the dance of pure love.

From Publishers Weekly
A sensuously styled, elegiac tale set in the mid-1970s, Makine's latest opens a window onto a generation of post-WWII Russian widows through one mysterious woman's vigil. In the village of Mirnoe on the northern White Sea coast, a young male journalist researching local customs meets an intriguing woman who has waited 30 years for her fianc, reported killed, to return from the war. Just 16 when her lover was conscripted, Vera devotes herself selflessly to the care of the town's many war widows: she rows out to tend to the widows' graves on a nearby island and lives alone, ever watchful. The narrator, writing in retrospect but 26 at the time of the story, was educated in St. Petersburg; ironic and arrogant, he believes he has Vera's selflessness figured out as a prosaic, idealized vision of womanhood. And yet, he learns, Vera has studied advanced linguistics in St. Petersburg, and returned to Mirnoe by choice. The closer he gets to her, the more he is shamed in the face of her towering presence. Makine, now almost 50 and the author of eight other novels (including Dreams of My Russian Summers), lives in Paris; he transforms a very simple premise into a richly textured story of love and loss. From Booklist
This wonderful novel is set in what is known as the Soviet period of stagnation--the 1970s, or late Brezhnev era. The university-educated narrator wistfully looks back on a few months in mid-decade when he left his cynical and jaded friends in Leningrad to travel to a small provincial town near the White Sea. Ostensibly writing about provincial folk customs, but also hoping to gather material for an anti-Soviet satire, he instead meets Vera, a woman much older than he who has waited 30 years for her lover to return from World War II. Makine, whose previous novels include Dreams of My Russian Summers (1997), presents an elegantly enigmatic tale that explores a number of themes that may seem a little outdated to some readers but which meld seamlessly with the novel's mise-en-scene, including devotion, duty, and the contradiction between perception and truth. The latter is driven home by the complicated relationship between the narrator and Vera, and the brief moment when he all but morphs into her long-lost lover. Frank Caso

Her honour is an essence that's not seen
By Lonya
William Shakespeare, Othello.

Andrei Makine's newest offering is "The Woman Who Waited". It is the story of a man pining for a woman he can never have, a woman living a life of "grievous beauty" waiting senselessly for a man who will never return. As with much of Makine's other works it is an elegiac prose-poem on loss and yearning. Although "The Woman Who Waited" did not have quite the same impact on me as some of Makine's earlier works ("Music of a Life" and "Dreams of My Russian Summers" come to mind) it is, nevertheless, a wonderfully realized piece of writing.

Makine, for those not familiar with his work, was born in the Soviet Union in 1958. He emigrated to France as a young man. He writes in French. (The Woman Who Waited was superbly translated from the French by Geoffrey Strachan, Makine's translator of choice). Makine's work for me combines the grace and elegance of the best French writers and the sad dark soul of the best Russian writers.

The unnamed narrator of Woman Who Waited is a cynical 26-year old resident of Leningrad. It is 1975, the midst of the Brezhnev era, and the narrator is part of a circle of artists and writers who chafe under the leaden weight of the regime. They smoke, drink, and scoff at notions of Soviet (and petit bourgeois) morality by adhering to notions of "free love". Random, emotion free couplings are the order of the day.

The narrator takes an opportunity to leave St. Petersburg to research customs and folk lore in the sub-Artic town of Mirnoe. Located close to the White Sea, near Murmansk and Archangelsk, Mirnoe is as close to a ghost town as you are likely to find. It is populated mostly by old ladies, a few old men, and just enough children in the area to support a one-room school house. Upon arrival in Mirnoe the narrator sees Vera. She is 46, self-composed and for the narrator a vision of some ideal version of grace and beauty. The narrator quickly hears that Vera, the local school teacher, said goodbye to her husband in 1945 at the town railway station. Sixteen at the time, Vera last words to her 18-year old husband promised to wait for him to return. Within weeks, during the successful battle for Berlin the husband is reported missing and presumed dead. Despite the virtual certainty of his death Vera has spent the next 30-years waiting chastely for the husband who will never return. As one cynical character, Otar, says to the narrator, Vera may be the only woman in Russia worth loving. The novel moves on from there in the form of the narrator's growing obsession with Vera. The life of Vera is revealed slowly to the reader as the narrator seeks to learn everything he can about her life. Along the way we see that many of his assumptions (and a few of my own) about Vera stand on shaky ground. As the novel nears its end we are treated to a fine example of being careful what we wish for.

Makine's writing is sparse and to the point. He has said repeatedly that he does not write to tell the reader what to think. He writes to tell a story as sparsely and concisely as he can and leave the thinking to the reader. That is one of the great challenges of reading Makine and one of the continuing great pleasures. You have to be actively engaged in the inner life of his characters, Makine does not do that work for you.

As I read The Woman Who Waited it reminded me of Jean Jacque Rousseau's wonderful epistolary novel "Julie or the New Heloise". In that novel the two main characters exchange a series of letters in which feelings conflict with intellect and where passion confronts purity and noble sentiment. The writing is dramatically different but some of the themes of each seem to bear more than a passing resemblance.

Early in the book Makine notes of Vera, as she walked along the shoreline only to stop at the same mailbox she had stopped at every day for thirty years that "what remained was the essence of things". Ultimately, the essence is the dish served by Andrei Makine, one without frills or adornments. I think it clear after reading "The Woman Who Waited" that Makine has provided us with a character in Vera whose honour is an essence that is seen.

This is yet another book by Andre Makine that deserves a wide audience.

What is love?
By Friederike Knabe
"A woman, so intensely destined for happiness... refusing instead to love" characterizes Vera. She's a mysterious, strikingly attractive woman who captures the mind and heart of the young nameless narrator of this delicate, reflective love story that enchants the reader. Since age sixteen, Vera has been waiting faithfully for three decades for her soldier fianc to return, living alone in an isolated northern Siberian village close to the White Sea. Andrei Makine is a master in exploring characters who survive at the edge of civilization, whether they are exiled political dissidents, ex-convicts, or the local people who belong to this remote harsh world. Here, he shows this at its most intimate level.

The plot itself is simple: a young man and an older woman meet during an important period in their lives and their worlds collide. Representing not only two generations, they also reflect two different visions of love, loyalty, altruism - life. It is highly relevant that the story unfolds against the remote, stunning landscape of the North, beautifully evoked by the author. There is undoubtedly a certain level of romanticizing of the Siberian environment - childhood home of Andrei Makine - in his detailed depiction of the forest emerging from the mist, the lake bathed in silvery moonlight, and even the very basic bathhouse that the community shares. It is, as the narrator reflects, a place frozen outside time.

Twenty-six-year-old Leningrad intellectual, jaded by the political environment there (it is the mid nineteen seventies and oblique references to Soviet reality seep into the story), arrives in Mirnoje to undertake research into the folklore of the North. Vera's life has been filled for many years with serving the community: she is looking after a group of old, abandoned war widows and teaches in primary school. From the first moment, the narrator glimpses the tall striking silhouette, clad in a long army coat, he is intrigued. Increasingly, though, his intellectual curiosity turns into something more. As he invents reasons to stay close, talk to her, and takes to following her in her daily routines, physical infatuation takes over that he finds difficult to control. Vera, old enough to be his mother, fully aware of the young man's desires, responds calmly, gently, yet remains aloof and mysterious. Keeping a diary of his evolving image of her, he rationalized her motives for the monastic life she leads, trying to capture the essence of her being. More than once, though, he has to revise his interpretation of who Vera is and what kind of love had made her wait for a man she hardly knew. Is it possible for the narrator, and by extension the reader, to conceive of such love and relate to it?

Makine's telling of the story, in slow motion, is achingly beautiful. It has to be savoured sentence by sentence, not rushed through. Having read the original French, which is, as always, exquisite, I cannot comment on the English translation. However, having read other Makine work in translation, I have been impressed with Geoffrey Strachan's particular talent to convey and transpose the delicate nuances in the fluid and poetic language that is the hallmark of Makine's French. Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue, by Sam Harris, Maajid Nawaz

In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? What do words like Islamism, jihadism, and fundamentalism mean in today’s world?

Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time―fearlessly and fully―and actually make progress.

Islam and the Future of Tolerance has been published with the explicit goal of inspiring a wider public discussion by way of example. In a world riven by misunderstanding and violence, Harris and Nawaz demonstrate how two people with very different views can find common ground.

Review
How refreshing to read an honest yet affectionate exchange between the Islamist-turned-liberal-Muslim Maajid Nawaz and the neuroscientist who advocates mindful atheism, Sam Harris… Their back-and-forth clarifies multiple confusions that plague the public conversation about Islam. (Irshad Manji New York Times Book Review 2015-11-08)

Provocative and profane… Islam and the Future of Tolerance exemplifies the virtues of open dialogue… All Harris and Nawaz seek is to give voice to the spirit of rebellion and reformation smoldering in the lands of Islam. Forcing it into flame will doubtless be a long time coming, but these two men should be lauded for endeavoring to provide a spark. (Brian Stewart National Review 2015-10-07)

It is sadly uncommon, in any era, to find dialogue based on facts and reason―but even more rarely are Muslim and non-Muslim intellectuals able to maintain critical distance on broad questions about Islam. Which makes Islam and the Future of Tolerance something of a unicorn. Nawaz and Harris discuss Islamism and jihadism from a historical as well as a philosophical angle, with no trace of sentiment or dogma. Most conversations about religion are marked by the inability of either side to listen, but here, at last, is a proper debate. (New Statesman 2015-12-18)

The ideas it leaves behind―about religion, politics, values and interpretation―linger long after the book is finished. They seem a vital contribution to the current conversation, so often defined by the real or imagined divides that the authors encourage us to cross… Islam and the Future of Tolerance deepens our understanding of religion, ideology, politics and the possibility of common ground. It could hardly come at a better time. (Jeremy Rutledge Post and Courier 2015-11-29)

[A] wise little volume. (Ray Olson Booklist 2015-09-01)

Readers with a knee-jerk opinion of Islam will learn a lot. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-07-01)

A worthwhile read on the state of Islam and religious tolerance in the world today… Those interested in a deferential and detailed dialogue about human rights, Islam, jihadism, and pluralism will find this book both enlightening and engaging. (Publishers Weekly 2015-10-16)

In this conversation, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz achieve what so many who take part in the debate on Islam and the West fail to accomplish: a civil but honest dialogue. The result is as illuminating as it is fascinating. Courteous and at times even chivalrous, the two men address every thorny issue on Islam, issues that lead so many others into wild shouting matches, personal attacks, and accusations of Islamophobia. In this gem of a book the authors lay it all out and set the rest of us a great example: that an incisive debate on Islam between a believer and a non-believer is attainable. Given the importance and the urgency of the topic, we must all read it and follow in their footsteps. (Ayaan Hirsi Ali, author of Infidel, Nomad, and Heretic)

Free thought and rational inquiry once characterized the relative liberalism and humanism of ancient Muslim societies and civilizations: the leading Sunni Imam, Abu Hanifa, would debate atheists inside the great mosques of Iraq; the Abbasid caliphs hosted debates amongst the leaders of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam at their courts in Baghdad; the Mughal emperors engaged in debate with Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists. Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz should be commended for conducting a frank and wide-ranging conversation about a number of key issues around religion, reform, and Islam in the modern world. Nawaz’s approach is based upon detailed familiarity with extremist worldviews, and with the history and tradition of reform theology and renewal within Islam that desperately needs to be amplified. I hope that this debate will be a fruitful endeavor, and illustrate that, in our increasingly-polarized world, it is possible and even normal for people with different viewpoints to have a civilized conversation and to learn from each other. (Sheikh Dr. Usama Hasan, Islamic scholar)

Back in Islam’s formative centuries, the engagement of Muslims with their ideological opponents helped them to forge the doctrines and traditions of their nascent faith―and perhaps now, as Maajid Nawaz locks horns with Sam Harris, we are at the start of another stage in Islam’s evolution. It is certainly a privilege to read their conversation, and to enjoy a flavor of those great debates between rival scholars that were once staged for the entertainment of the Caliph in Baghdad. (Tom Holland, historian and author of In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire)

The reform of Islam is shaping up to be the most important issue in political ideology of the twenty-first century. This honest and intelligent dialogue is a superb exploration of the intellectual and moral issues involved. (Steven Pinker, author of The Better Angels of Our Nature)

A Much Needed Honest Discussion on Islamic Inspired Violence and Oppression
By Truth Revolt
Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz know more about Islam than Reza Aslan, Glenn Greenwald, Karen Armstrong, and all the other smearests of critics of Islam combined, and they prove it in this wonderful short book. With unwavering honesty, they delve into what truly inspires Islamic violence, oppression, and hate, whether it is the Quran, Hadith, or Muslims following Muhammad's example, they aren't afraid to address the true inspiration for radical Islam. Each approaches the subject from their own background, Nawaz as a moderate Muslim, and Harris as a free thinker, to address what can be done to increase tolerance in the Islamic world. This book is vital to both non-Muslims AND Muslims to realize that beliefs matter, motivation matters, religious doctrines matter, and increasing secularism in the Islamic world is essential if Islamic oppression is going to recede. This book is a strong primer that everyone who buys into the hype of 'Islamophobia' should read. It is OKAY and NECESSARY to criticize religion.
This book is a much needed critique and discussion that more people ought to have the courage to have.

By Max Creager
The read is fantastically quick, but it lays an amazingly useful mental frame-work in order to understand the global phenomena of political Islam. It is fascinating how the two have managed to shift the weight of the arguments back onto the turf of the pseudo-liberals, who apologize for all radical behavior as if its causes could never be Islam. Those critics have a lot to answer for according to Harris and Nawaz, in the books brilliantly explained concept of the "low expectations of reverse racism." I am hesitant to say that this book will change anyones views who has deeply held convictions on the topic, because of the sheer polarization of the discourse; however, given the nature of the conversation in its civility, tone and the specificity of terms I think anyone giving this book an honest read will come out challenging one or more of their preconceived notions about Islam, minority-groups, liberalism, radicalization ect.

Clear and succinct, no matter your opinion.
By Steven D Sobol
Amidst ubiquitous criticisms that seem to intentionally misrepresent [Harris and Nawaz's] positions, this new work seems to clearly describe an objective that respects and bolsters every human's right to flourishing autonomy while condemning the same's iterations that diminishes that of others. Harris continues to impress as a philosopher, communicator, and scientist.

Inhuman Resources
By Dorothy
Here's one lesson I have learned: in fiction, a woman who has a rocky relationship with her family sends up a red flag. In this book by Meg Cabot, Director of Human Resources Amy does not get along with her parents or her siblings (sirens in my head start wailing at that detail). Her friends are bigoted sorority sisters from college. The leading man in the story, Mitch, makes a funny remark to her: "lavaliere that." Amy is a character it's fun to dislike. She is engaged to Mitch's older brother, Stuart. He, too, is fun to dislike. Stuie gets worse and worse as the story progresses, until his only ally is his mother. The Hertzog family dysfunction is funny, to a point. When it interrupts the romantic flow of the plot one too many times, I want to call out the editor.

In this book, the unlikable characters take over the plot. The heroine, Kate, is homeless, broke and eventually jobless -- she's lovely but her situation is not a barrel of laughs. Her love life is kind of a shambles. You want the best for her, but the turn in her fortunes is slow to arrive. It's a fun book, but not super fun.

Just Okay for a Meg Cabot Story
By zonnebloem
Easy, fun read but not as good as Every Boy's Got One. I really wanted to like Katie more but I couldn't. I wanted to root for her and lawyer boy even more but I didn't really feel a spark between them. I think this one would have benefitted from being a hybrid novel where we see the characters note raft but then also get the emails as extra info.

Different take on a novel
By Dessa Brunette
I have read many of this author's works and enjoyed them all. This particular book was no exception. I did think it was I interesting that the story was told through emails, phone conversations, memos, and IM conversations. While some may not enjoy this unconventional format, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy!

Like the Moon and the Sun: Indonesia in the Words of an American Diplomat, by Stanley Harsha

Like the Moon and the Sun is a story of culture, religion and politics in Indonesia through the eyes of a former United States diplomat who had close connections to Indonesia for nearly 30 years. Stanley Harsha first came to Indonesia as a young diplomat in 1986, returning for multiple diplomatic tours before retiring and writing this memoir. Acculturated into a Javanese family through marriage, he offers intimate perspectives on Indonesia’s rich multicultural society and customs. This is the first book on Indonesia written by an American diplomat since a 1990 book by Ambassador Marshall Green. The book will be of interest to anyone wanting to better understand Indonesia and U.S.-Indonesian relations, as well as issues of human rights, the war against terrorism and religious tolerance. Appealing for Indonesians and Americans to better understand each other, the book compares the two societies. The title, Like the Moon and the Sun, comes from an Indonesian proverb describing a perfect match, representing the yin and yang of two contrasting peoples and traditions enhancing each other. Based on first-hand experience, the author describes Indonesia’s peaceful transition from a dictatorship to the world’s third largest democracy, critically analyzing religion, human rights and the war against terrorism. The book explains why Indonesian Islam is tolerant and peaceful, traits that are shared with the United States. However, the book also is sharply critical of intolerant trends in both nations, Islamophobia promulgated by the Christian right in the U.S. and hatred fomented by a small minority of hardline Muslims in Indonesia. The book also calls for human rights accountability in both countries, for past killings and kidnappings of civilians by Indonesian security forces, and for the torture and killing of terrorist suspects by U.S. security forces and the CIA. The author argues that while the U.S. war against terrorism has eliminated many threats, it has created more terrorists than it has eliminated. During his decades of experience with Indonesia, the author had close relationships with people across society, including the current President Joko Widodo, human rights leaders, cultural icons and religious leaders of all faiths. The author also knew victims of gross human rights violations and human trafficking, telling their compelling stories. Indonesia’s prominent Muslim scholar, Azyumardi Azra, wrote in his forward to the book, “Stanley possesses information that is both varied and vast. He has mixed not only in diplomatic circles but also with journalists, intellectuals, religious figures, students, civil society activists, and also, with ordinary people.” Stanley Harsha makes a plea to the world to understand how Islam is practiced in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim majority country, and “how this type of moderate Muslim culture represents Islam with a smiling face.” Indonesia’s most respected human rights attorney, Adnan Buyung Nasution, wrote about the book, “His understanding of Indonesian culture and politics is impressive. This book should be read by anyone who is interested in learning about Indonesian relations with America.” Michael Vatikiotis, Regional Director Asia, for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, writes, “Stan Harsha has written a very personal account of his journey through Indonesia, as a husband, father and diplomat.”

About the Author
Stanley Harsha came to Indonesia in 1986 on his first overseas assignment as a United States diplomat. Like most people who set foot in Indonesia, he fell in love with the people and culture. He had four assignments in Indonesia, spanning 12 years of his 28-year career with the U.S. Department of State. He most recently served as U.S. Consul for Sumatra (2009-2011), with previous assignments as Deputy Political Counselor (2007-2009), Press Attach (2001-2004) and Public Affairs Officer for Sumatra (1987-1990). During these years he dealt with many issues, from religious tolerance and terrorism to democracy building and human rights, as well as with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. He also served as Charge d’affaires, a.i. in Timor-Leste in 2007, and has been posted to Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan, and Namibia. In Washington, D.C., he most recently was a Senior Advisor for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. State Department (2012-2013) and as Executive Director of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (2011-2012). Since retiring as a diplomat in 2013, Stanley has divided his time between his homes in Conifer, Colorado and Indonesia. He now dedicates himself to writing, building bilateral education ties, and promoting religious tolerance. His wife, Henny, is from Solo, Central Java, and they have two grown children. Before becoming a diplomat, Stanley was a journalist in the U.S. and in Venezuela. He graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and also studied at Universidad de Costa Rica and Universidad de Mexico. He is fluent in Indonesian, Malaysian, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
