On October 5, 1962, a god was born, for that day marked the release of Dr. No starring Sean Connery as super-cool British secret agent James Bond. To commemorate the film's 40th anniversary, Nourmand, co-proprietor of London's Reel Poster Gallery and a film poster consultant for Christie's, has collected the Bond series movie posters (more than 200), including lobby one-sheets, teaser posters for forthcoming releases, and some foreign versions dating from Dr. No to 1999's The World Is Not Enough. Each poster includes a caption detailing its background, a film plot synopsis, and special production notes (if any). There are also additional goodies such as festival posters, a spread of special artwork appearing in Esquire in the 1960s, and profiles of each artist. The style of these posters has changed over time, with the golden Connery and anemic Roger Moore years mostly utilizing paintings, while the short-lived Timothy Dalton era and current Pierce Brosnan ads are photo montages, although almost all feature Bond brandishing a pistol with some shapely babe in the background. I STARTED READING JAMES BOND BOOKS IN 1963 WHEN I WAS 13 YEARS OLD. I HAVE CONTINUED TO ENJOY THE BOOKS AND THE MOVIES FOR OVER 50 YEARS. I JUST RECEIVED THIS EXCELLENT SOFT COVER BOOK. IT IS OVER-SIZED AND THE PAGES AND POSTERS ARE OF EXCELLENT QUALITY - SUITABLE FOR FRAMING. THE POSTERS GO THROUGH PIERCE BRONSAN' THIRD MOVIE - THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. THERE IS SOME TEXT, BUT THE MAIN FOCUS IS THE POSTERS.

"... THESE IMAGES (THE POSTERS) HAVE BECOME SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE VISUAL TEASERS IN CINEMATIC HISTORY AND ARE NOW SOME OF THE HOTTEST ITEMS OF MEMORABILIA AMONG BOTH BOND AFICIONADOS AND MOVIE COLLECTORS."

A Legendary Collection

This is an art book - plain and simple.
The paintings are stunning and remind us of a time before pompous TV ads and Internet campaigns - when poster art meant something.

Even though the collection is not complete (that would take several more books) I think it is "the best of..." as well as concept art, which by itself is worth the price of the book.

The book is oversized and the printing if of quality, so you can enjoy the classic posters as well as the more recent ones.

Well worth the money.

This primer on moral philosophy, compiled by philosophy professor (and former competitive boxer) Marino, is both an introduction to the science of oughts and a demonstration of the subject’s breadth. The first half collects excerpts from the canonical ethics texts of Western philosophy, including classics by Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant, and Mill, as well as a few wild cards (like Schopenhauer and Kierkegaard), which, though no less relevant, tend to appear less frequently in collections of this sort. The second half, more contemporary and somewhat more applied in its focus, includes such well-known works as Rawls’ Theory of Justice and Walzer’s discussion of dirty hands but also presents pieces that confront such specific ethical quandaries as animal rights, abortion, and treatment of the environment. Existentialism, Marino’s specialty, is represented with an excerpt from Sartre and a prefatory reminder that life is about making choices. Capably pulled together by Marino’s brief and pithy introductions of each excerpt, this selection will be of primary interest to students of philosophical ethics (as well as teachers looking for a textbook on the topic). --Brendan Driscoll

Essential for any ethicist or philosopher

This book is exactly what it says it includes, the basic (and essential) writings of moral philosophy. It offers the most central and important articles/books/arguments for ethical theories such as Utilitarianism, Deontological Ethics, Cultural Relativism, etc. It ranges from Plato to Peter Singer and beyond. Normally, you'd have to buy numerous books to get all this philosophy, but it's all compiled together for a very low price. This book could easily be used for an introductory ethics class since it offers so much, and even more advance classes since many works can be exhaustively studied in their own courses. Once I saw this in my campus bookstore I knew I had to purchase it.

Time for a new edition

I used this book for an introductory ethics course I was teaching, and on the whole found it good. The range of philosophers is excellent, the texts selected are good, and the excerpts from the texts are well-chosen.

You get a solid grounding in the history of ethical literature from Plato through Kierkegaard and Sartre, as well as plenty of contemporary philosophical writing on ethics in the second half of this large volume.

My major gripe is that the book badly needs a revision. The latest edition is 2010. It needs to be reissued for this reason: there are a LOT of typos. Misspellings abound throughout the translations, and stray punctuation marks pop up often. It degrades student respect for the text when I constantly have to apologize on behalf of Mr. Marino for misspellings in the text.

Recommented for ethics classes but not for individual readers

I use this book in my ethics classes but limit the number of readings because students often say it is too difficult. The readings which cover both theory and practice are well chosen, but I wish the author had given a little more introduction to each section; It is a good introductory book provided you are in an ethics class where you can discuss the schools and writers. Not easy on your own.

Embedded SoPC design with Nios II processor and VHDL examples

An SoPC (system on a programmable chip) integrates a processor, memory modules, I/O peripherals, and custom hardware accelerators into a single FPGA (field-programmable gate array) device. In addition to the customized software, customized hardware can be developed and incorporated into the embedded system as well. The new flexibility allows us to configure the soft-core processor, create tailored I/O interfaces, and develop specialized hardware accelerators for computation-intensive tasks. As these technologies have matured, they have gradually become mainstream practice, and it is now possible to use a PC and an inexpensive FPGA prototyping board to construct a complex digital system. This book uses a "learn by doing" approach and illustrates the hardware and software design and development process by a series of examples. An Altera FPGA prototyping board and its Nios II soft-core processor are used for this purpose. The emphasis of the book is on hardware design and integration, and the book is divided into four major parts:

Part I covers HDL and synthesis of custom hardware
Part II introduces the Nios II processor and provides an overview of embedded software development
Part III demonstrates the design and development of hardware and software of several complex I/O peripherals, including a PS2 keyboard and mouse, a graphic video controller, an audio codec, and an SD (secure digital) card

The examples are realistic projects and can be implemented and tested on the board. Some can be used as basic IP cores to be incorporated into more sophisticated systems.

An embedded SoPC utilizes both customized software and hardware and is a very powerful design paradigm. However, its design and development require knowledge of several computer engineering disciplines and involves an array of software tools. While it is rewarding, the learning can be a long and winding journey. The book shows the trailhead and guides readers through the initial steps to exploit the full potential of this emerging methodology.

About the Author
Dr. Pong P. Chu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cleveland State University in Ohio. He obtained a BS degree from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, and a PhD from Iowa State University. He has taught undergraduate- and graduate-level digital systems and computer architecture courses for more than a decade and has received instructional grants from the National Science Foundation and Cleveland State University.

From raw VHDL to working Nios II

I started reading this book after a course on VHDL applied on the Altera DE2 (everything on VHDL the hard way), and before starting a thesis project focused on Nios II, which I had read about but hadn't seen in the classroom. To be noted, this is my second thesis project, with some 20 years of industry experience in software engineering. So I think I have some experience in well written books and the ones that are not ;)

The book is perfectly written in a clear way, with a good division in four areas of interest which give progressive knowledge on how to develop embedded systems in a Nios II environment. Reader will be introduced to VHDL, then Nios II, then device drivers on the Altera DE1 development board and finally hardware accelerators. Concepts are clearly exposed and previous developments are smartly reused leading to a nice understanding of Nios II embedded development with both C language microprocessor code and VHDL hardware accelerators working together.

Not as a criticism, but as suggestion for professor Chu to go further, a fifth part centered on real time operating systems (RTOS) would be much appreciated. And this means covering Ethernet usage and the TCP/IP stack (hello Interniche and OS-II). This would give a complete overview of embedded development, in my opinion and understanding this is an Altera DE1 resources centered book.

Also, some chapter on how to live in the IP (open)core world would be of interest, with an actual example of using and licesing third party IP. A little overview of the FPGA marketplace and what devices and IP can be found, and a comment on the multiprocessor system-on-chip arena would be nice too.

But back to what the book is, if you want to go from basic understanding of programming (no previous VHDL required) to mastering Nios II on Altera development boards, go for it.

I searched the earth for this book

When I was very young, I borrowed this wonderful book from a Brooklyn Public Library. The Author, Michael Burban, was a student of Robert Beverley Hale, and in his footsteps, he taught through dissecting old master drawings. There was no greater draughtsman than Michelangelo. Imagine how much can be learned from when one of the most respected artists of the Students art League, picks apart the drawings of Michelangleo. Lessons from Michelangelo. The drawings are unparalled. Burban, chooses, old and late drawings that span the life of Michelangelo. Burban, starts out by pointing out the very basics of form, perspective, proportion, gesture, then delves into artistic anatomy, and finishes with some thoughts on drapery. It stresses discipline and basics, and doesn't sell any shortcuts. After keeping this book out of the library for quite some time, it was mistakenly returned. I searched the library for months, never to see it again. I ventured to the Students art league in NY, unfortunately Burban was away for that term. I contacted a used book specialist. Nearly two years passed, and I received a phone call, the book was found, the price was twice the retail, 75 dollars, what a deal. It was the easily the best book I ever bought. I love this book, it is one of only a few books which I can say has real sentimental value. In a way it changed my life. I appreciate Michelangelo and his beautiful drawings, in no small part, thanks to this book. I wish Burban would write another book, or at least that this book would see a reprint. If you ever have a chance to buy this book, don't think twice. Its a great book.

Excellent work...sadly out of print

I just spoke to Michael Burban a few weeks ago, and am trying to convince him to release a new version of the book. He says he has learned much since he first wrote it, so the new book--if it ever comes out--should be exciting.

Great book on the work of a Master written by one!!!

I had the great privilege of studying with Mr. Burban at the Art Student's League. In this book Burban distills a great body of knowledge into digestible form for those of us aspiring to reach a level of skill commensurate with his. The determined figurative artist will read this book over and over and over again. Few teachers have broached this subject with the great ability to communicate these concepts as well as Burban, Richer and Hale. Fortunately for us the tradition of great figure drawing can continue to thrive thanks to their efforts!!!

Great book for students!

As a recent graduate pursuing a career in architecture, I found this book incredibly informative. The breakdown of architecture positions, as well as architecture related fields is invaluable, and something I never really learned in college. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive overview of the architecture field, especially college students who are trying to narrow down their career path.

A Good Book For Beginners

I thought that Ryan had a lot of practical advice in his book. He tells you what you need to know to be successful in getting your foot in the door, and also how to advance once you do get your foot in the door. He also is frank about why people should be architects. He also doesn't pull any punches in regards to why you shouldn't be an architect as well. Very helpful.

Cryptography is a key technology in electronic key systems. It is used to keep data secret, digitally sign documents, access control, etc. Therefore, users should not only know how its techniques work, but they must also be able to estimate their efficiency and security. For this new edition, the author has updated the discussion of the security of encryption and signature schemes and recent advances in factoring and computing discrete logarithms. He has also added descriptions of time-memory trade of attacks and algebraic attacks on block ciphers, the Advanced Encryption Standard, the Secure Hash Algorithm, secret sharing schemes, and undeniable and blind signatures.

Johannes A. Buchmann is a Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the Technical University of Darmstadt, and the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cryptology. In 1985, he received the Feodor Lynen Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Furthermore, he has received the most prestigious award in science in Germany, the Leibniz Award of the German Science Foundation.

Johannes A. Buchmann is Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at the Technical University of Darmstadt, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Cryptology. He has also received the most prestigious award in science in Germany, the Leibniz Award of the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).

Do not adopt this book as your textbook

This book should not be adopted as a textbook for a course in cryptography. It demonstrates little to no copy editing. For example, the text switches from English to German within the same sentence. This book contains countless errors which are not even reported in the errata. Further, the book is terse to the point of not supporting the students. It presumes advanced knowledge of algebra which is not explained in the text itself. This is true when it discusses irreducible polynomials, polynomial division, and its very terse segment on Galois Theory in an early chapter.

I adopted this text for my course based in part on prior Amazon recommendations and the general reputation of the Springer UTM series. Please, do not adopt this book as a textbook unless and until Springer performs a major rewrite. My students impressions of this textbook were confirmed not only by myself, but by one of my colleagues in the department as well. This experience with this book was in a 600 level graduate course populated by both mathematics graduate students and computer science graduate students. All students are profoundly unhappy with this text.

Good but Brief Book

Buchmann's text provides an excellect introduction to cryptography for those who are comfortable with mathematical rigour, and have some knowledge of number theory. Buchmann does provide a review for each of the number theoretic concepts he introduces throughout the text. However, one who is unfamiliar with number theory and not comfortable with learning by proofs might get lost. The other problem with the text is its brevity. This might be suitable for a class on cryptograpy, but it proves quite detremental to self-study. The brevity is especially problematic in the section dealing with Elliptic Curve Crypto (3 and 1/2 pages) Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is comfortable with rigour, and doesn't mind brevity.

Worst cryptography book I've ever seen

This book is horrible.
The text is ugly, some definitions are strange (for example, the author defines O-notation for complexity in a totally non-standard and non-intuitive way) and the reading the book is a pain.

Please use another Cryptography book. Good examples are Mao's Modern Cryptography: Theory and Practice) and Stinson's Cryptography: Theory and Practice for example. There are also the Handbook of Applied Cryptography and Foundations of Cryptography, volumes one and two.

A great book full of variety!!

This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.

But then I discovered Amazon.com. Here there were millions of choices of origami books, but I chose to get "Origami Zoo, an Amazing Collection of folded paper animals." This book was at my level exactly!!

My fav models are, so far:

- The Penguin. Even though this is one of the easiest, it still looks lifelike side-on.

- The Owl. This model is also 2D, but it perches on a thin rod, and looks lifelike as well.

- The Duck. This model is a particularly cute 3D one!

- The Sea Turtle. This model is both fun to make and cool to look at!!

- The Fox. This model is rather easy, 3D, and lifelike!

None of the models in this book are very easy. Most of them are at the intermediate level, but the last 10 or so models are complex. I still haven't gotten to the real complex models yet, but when I do, I hope I have a lot of large origami paper on hand!!

This book contains info at the start, about folds, paper, designing models and so on.

I would recommend this book to people who like to make a variety of animals, not just plain four legged animals, but insects and sea creatures as well!!

Splendid, Scintillating, A must for origami fan.

This book contains dozens of origami animals, ranging from med to highly-complex. At first we may doubt this is just another routine four-leg animals. However, two authors give us models unexpectedly various, and most of the figurations are wonderful. We have some of the most beauitful modeling here: A crab, a eagle in full-spread wing(with the feathers!), A dog in the doghouse(single paper), A very vivid rabbit. And the folding steps are full of wonder. The only disadvantage in this book is that for a new folder the diagrams are very neat and succinct, usually Several steps combined in one diagram. But this deserves since this book contains so many models and they are arranged by level of difficulty. This is a must for any origami fan.
