Allison’s work shines a light into the dark shadows of modern day animal agriculture, exposing something that the industry wishes we would forget- animals matter. What if the Shoe Were on the Other Hoof? is a poignant examination of the fundamental truth about all of us; none of us want to hurt animals. So why do we? and—the best argument yet—the “I won’t get enough protein” defense

I think the true question is not what this book discusses—it is what it doesn’t discuss. WSWOH covers the whole spectrum of animal-related concerns: birth to death of the animals society eats, the way most individuals care deeply for some animals (dogs and cats) but ignore the well-being of animals who have an equal amount of intelligence and capacity to feel (cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys) and common arguments against veganism, the “normal and natural” argument, the ever famous “I only purchase humane meat” argument, and—the best argument yet—the “I won’t get enough protein” defense. In addition, Keith talks about the health and environmental effects of consuming animals and addresses the intersection of human and animal rights and the paradox many educators face when it comes to speaking up versus staying quiet about ugly truths, like animal cruelty in our food system.
What truly makes the discussion of these topics special, though, is the way Keith presents them. He doesn’t state fact after fact in a way that makes the reader feel like he or she is reading a textbook. Rather, he engages the reader by constantly asking questions. Moreover, each section of his book is no longer than a few pages, so it can be read in short spurts. It’s likely that readers will walk away asking themselves questions about their own behavior after reading just one or two sections.
Keith also presents his points with a sense of humor, which makes the topics being presented feel less threatening.
In short, I highly recommend Keith's book. It won't leave readers disappointed, just more aware of the issues that exist within our current food supply systems.

I highly recommend this informative

As a struggling meat-eater in a family of carnivores, I have been drawn to the thought of a plant-based diet. Talking with Keith, and then reading this book, has pushed it home for me. His words are non-judgemental, yet informative and moving. I considered myself savvy on the subject of vegetarianism, yet never really thought about the sadness and pain the animals endure. They're "just" animals, right?

I highly recommend this informative, captivating, entertaining (yes, it IS humerous oftentimes, thanks to Keith's personality and writing skills) and passionate book for people of all ages. It would be a great book for monthly reading clubs.

For me, reading this brings compassion, not judgment

This is an excellent book. Not perfect, but very good anyways.

I read this immediately after reading Leo Tolstoy's 'The Kingdom of God is Within You' and I would highly recommend that book also.

Some might worry that this book attacks Christianity, or the Church, but I can tell you that it does not. There is an examination in progress throughout the book, of why we do the things we do. As we have been endowed by our Creator with the wherewithal and means to examine our reality, I believe it is our responsibility to do so. We cannot check our brains at the door when it comes to God or church.

I said that this book does not attack Christianity or the Church. But it is critical of a false-Christianity and the false-church that many times has supplanted the real.

From reading this book (and the Tolstoy one I mentioned above) one begins to form an impression that the Church is a growing organism. It is not a construction of cement and stone, or a stationary monument that we visit to honor the fallen. It is possible for the Church to be distracted or led astray, while still being God's chosen.

From that you might infer that this book is liberal. I do not think this book is overly liberal or conservative, it examines the topic without the filtering of a bias. (just my opinion, of course)

I disagree with his inference that our "human ideas that please and flatter us as though [they] were all our own invention and teaching springing up from within ourselves" are "natural" and therefore our natural state is in opposition to Christianity. This pride is NOT natural, not from God, not part of our creation. Yes, we have succumbed to pride, and mistakenly taken it up even enthusiastically as a tool for success in this world, but it is not natural any more than our clothes are. But I do agree with Ellul that this posturing way of life IS in opposition to true Christianity.

I entitled this review that "reading this brings compassion, not judgment." What I mean is summed up by Ellul here:
"Those who attack Christianity usually do it, then, by pointing first to our disastrous practice. The attacks of Voltaire, Holbach, Feuerbach, Marx, and Bakounine, not to mention those that concern us more directly, are justified. Instead of defending ourselves against them and attempting a maladroit, useless, and contemptible apologetic, we should listen to them and take seriously what they say. For they demolish Christianity, that is, the deviation to which Christian practice has subjected God's revelation." And the "demolishing" of the "deviation" is tremendously good! If Jacques Ellul had written this today, instead of in the 1980's, I'm sure he would have included references to Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, Barker, Pat Condell, and many of the modern atheists and critics of Christianity. And once we admit that most of the complaints brought against modern Christians are not because of faith in God, but because of a facade of human construction, that wall between us begins to crumble. Maybe we can be taught by people with different views, as we in turn are ready to teach them? Perhaps there is not too great of a separation between all of us human beings that we cannot meet together and talk, maybe eat together. After all, Jesus ate with all sorts of people, and as far as I know he didn't make each one state or defend their beliefs before they came in to sit and eat with him.

Recognizing where Christianity has been Subverted carries the seeds of how it will be Reclaimed

Rarely have I taken as long to read a book as I have in working through this one. The content demanded reading, re-reading and pauses to consider what was being said. Make no mistake, this is a book that requires careful and attentive reading to hear what it is saying as well as to discern what it is not saying.

Jacques Ellul was a prolific writer in his native French and more of his works are being translated into English. He is known to most as a philosopher and in particular for his deterministic approach toward technology and its impact upon individuals and society. Ellul however, was a Christian Anarchist too, who had a great deal to say about personal faith, the true nature of the church and the societal, cultural and historical changes that have taken place. The term Christian Anarchist is one that remains grossly misunderstood by many. This is not anarchism in the sense of 18th and 19th century political anarchism. This is in many ways a return to early Christianity and the early churches recognition that relationship and a personal walk with Christ was far more to be desired and in fact was antithetical to a walk based upon obligation and external social pressures toward conformity with an established norm. At its heart it is a return to Christ's direct teaching and strong aversion to the religion of the Pharisees of his day who focused upon the external appearance and had nothing to do with the Kingdom Christ had to establish.

It is really from this that the entire premise of this book springs. Ellul draws a stark distinction between the faith Christ delivered once and for all (Christianity) and what it has become over time due to the influences of Greek Philosophy, Roman Law and many other societal trends over time and in the present age (Christendom.) Christendom, Ellul states, has largely departed from, and indeed is many instances is diametrically opposite that which Christ originally taught and modeled.

Keep in mind that this book was originally written in 1984 in French. This translation of Ellul's 40th book came in 1986. Despite the more than 25 years that have passed since it's being written and the great upheavals and exponential technological change, this message is still very timely and contemporary.

The book itself moves in broad themes to demonstrate the radical changes in the understanding of the basics of Christianity. After initially defining the contradictions that he observed in the first chapter Ellul then moves systematically though several influences outside of the core teaching and relationship model of Christianity that he sees as particularly key. The contradictions noted include,

* the denial of progressive revelation in theory but the practice of progressive changes of interpretation.

* the ongoing struggle of grace and law and the creative and myriad ways that grace is diminished while law is promoted.

* the continued synthesis of cultural and societal values into the core of the Christian religion which in the end comes to reflect society rather than being a change agent within it.

* the foundation of Christ's clear teachings and simple message undermined by Greek Philosophy, Roman Law and turned into an "ism".

* the clear teachings of Christ rationalized away in favor of an intellectually consistent, but content-wise opposite message watered down with the original message cast aside.

With the problem thus defined, Ellul moves on to address how the current forms of Christendom have been arrived upon. The principle elements focused upon is Christianity's historic alignment with political power in direct contradiction to the teachings of Christ about such compromise and use of earthly means to attempt to bring about spiritual results. In a very cursory manner, Ellul covers many of the elements of the paganizing of the church that are covered in far greater detail in Frank Viola and George Barna's Pagan Christianity. Included in these forms is the tendency to moralize or move to legalistic checklists to define how true a person's religion is or may be. The emphasis upon money and wealth in the western church context along with the alignment of Christendom with different forms of governmental theory to prove, after the fact, the validity of the current societally in-vogue economic theory whether that be LaisseFaire capitalism or Marxism, to give but two.

From here then Ellul begins to paint in broad themes through chapters that continue to build upon the foundation laid. He moves from forms within Christendom illustrating his point and then to some of the overlying societal influences that have shaped Christendom into what it is today in the western world especially.

Most of the chapters can actually stand on their own as essays on each individual element addressed. The issues touched up include:

* The artificial distinction between the "sacred" and "secular" in institutional religion.

* The false equation of Christianity with Morality.

* The role of women within society and the church.

* The historical influence of Islam back upon Christendom.

* The perversion of Christendom intertwined with political power.

* The progression of Nihilism in response to societal woes and the themes of it within organized Christianity.

* The heart of why Christianity as a religion is diametrically opposite to historical Christianity as delivered by Christ and received by the early saints.

* The influence of "Dominions and Powers" behind the scenes. (This has to be read to be understood ... it's not what Christians today, would expect it to be.)

* A conclusion that recognizes that despite the broad trends, a remnant or core still remains of faithful people who "get it" and walk outside of and despite the broader perversions and trends that plague organized religion.

Ellul has proven to be an extremely challenging and beneficial read for me. In fact a read that can be said to be pivotal in many understandings that I am currently relearning. Make no mistake, though, Ellul is not a traditional or an easy read. I found elements of things that I'm not in complete agreement with as well. For example, Ellul holds to a form of Universalism and some of his examples of the Trinity come close (or maybe even cross into) modalism. Ellul's personal history as a young Marxist before he came to Christ as well as the context he writes from with the church in France as his experiential model don't line up with everything "neatly" that an evangelical American can relate directly to perhaps.

All these things aside however, this is a powerful read. I strongly recommend it.

Great, but get 2007 edition

There is a new edition (2007), get that one instead of the 1995 edition. In 2007, it has been packaged with CDs instead of tapes.

Somali is a language with many features that will seem exotic to most English speaking learners. Accents are based on pitch (rather than stress) and the placement of the pitch accent often determines the gender of the noun. In addition, nouns can flip genders when they are put into the plural. We're definitely not in Kansas any more.

That being said, this is an extremely user-friendly approach to a formidably difficult language. The explanations of the most unfamiliar grammar are very clear and easy to follow. The exercises, which in the beginning lessons are not too difficult, get more challenging as the course goes on, but always remain close to the material already presented.The dialogues start out pretty formlaically- there's a lot of "How are you?" "Come in!" "How's the family?", but they gradually get more interesting, as they follow an English teacher's journey to the Horn of Africa, where he eventually takes up his duties in a Somali town. Do get the CDs, though- a student who knows Arabic would probably find the sounds of Somali pretty familiar, but the stress-tone patterns are likely to be very different and unfamiliar and without a lot of practice it would be difficult to reproduce them acceptably. The author is, incidentally, a scholar of Somali poetry; his website is also worth checking out.

Susan Donovan's novels are witty, sexy, and entertaining―"brain candy for smart women," as she puts it. Her books include Not That Kind of Girl, The Night She Got Lucky and Ain't Too Proud to Beg. Susan is a former newspaper journalist with degrees from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and has worked as a reporter in Chicago, Albuquerque, and Indianapolis. Donovan knocked me off my feet again!

Sam is a harried single mother of three. Her ex declared he was gay and skipped out before her youngest was even born, and has never paid child support. At a girl's night out, she gets a little tipsy and admits she would not mind being a "kept woman" to a wealthy man. One of her friends is the campaign manager for Jack, a womanizing politician in need of an image makeover since the last time her ran for office and made sexist remarks that lost him the female vote. She proposes that he pretend to be engaged to Sam to soften his image when he runs for the US Senate. Sam balks at first, then when she realizes how much she could gain financially as a result, she decides to do it for her children.

The press eats up the relationship between the two, which almost immediately turns physical. But Jack's former lover Christy is a journalist who will do anything to discredit the relationship to secure a better media job. As she schemes to locate the long lost husband to get Sam to admit the truth of the relationship, Sam and Jack are finding themselves falling for each other and wanting to stay together after the primary. Will Christy's scheming be successful?

As always, Donovan infuses her story with great bantering dialogue and lots of sensuality. Yes, the plot is recylced, but Donovan's skill with a written word makes this one a winner. The pair oozes sex appeal off every page, and make for one fun ride to the finish!

A fair read

This book started out interesting and then got bogged down by Ms. Bagshawe's repetitivenes.

The novel tells the story of Diana, a spolied and beautiful English woman who marries Ernie. Ernie is not an upper-class man, but has become quite wealthy as a corporate raider type in a big publishing firm. Together they move to New York City where Diana becomes a society wife while Ernie becomes even more ruthless in business. During the course of Ernie's business dealings, he meets Michael Cicero, a small publisher of children's books. He takes a dislike to Michael and vows to destroy him.

Meanwhle, Diana and Ernie's marriage falls apart and Diana is left humiliated and penniless. Somehow, she manages to fend for herself and begins working with Michael. A love affair of course ensues.

It makes for a fast read but is very much spoiled by repetitiveness. Bagshawe must provide at least a hundred descriptions of Diana's beauty, Michael's attraction to Diana, and Diana's attraction to Michael. This gets very old and makes the story drag on and on.

A fair try but is in desperate need of more imaginaion and good editing.

I've read this twice. Nice romantic build-up. Smart male and female leads with good banter. Sex done well. Children involved were real and added good interest. Well-written, well-told. I recommend this book.

CHRISTIE JOHN GEANKOPLIS is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Preface

The title of this text has been changed from Transport Processes and Unit Operations to Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations). This was done because the term "unit operations" has been largely superseded by the term "separation processes," which better reflects the modern nomenclature being used.

In this fourth edition, the main objectives and the format of the third edition remain the same. The sections on momentum transfer have been greatly expanded, especially the sections on fluidized beds, flow meters, mixing, and non-Newtonian fluids. Material has been added to the chapters on mass transfer. The chapters on absorption, distillation, and liquid-liquid extraction have also been enlarged. More new material has been added to the sections on ion exchange and crystallization. The chapter on membrane separation processes has been greatly expanded, especially for gas-membrane theory.

The field of chemical engineering involved with physical and physical-chemical changes of inorganic and organic materials and, to some extent, biological materials is overlapping more and more with the other process-engineering fields of ceramic engineering, process metallurgy, agricultural food engineering, wastewater-treatment (civil) engineering, and bioengineering. The principles of momentum, heat, and mass transport and the separation processes are widely used in these processing fields.

The principles of momentum transfer and heat transfer have been taught to all engineers. The study of mass transfer has been limited primarily to chemical engineers. However, engineers in other fields have become more interested in mass transfer in gases, liquids, and solids.

Since chemical and other engineering students must study so many topics today, a more unified introduction to the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer and to the applications of separation processes is provided. In this text the principles of the transport processes are covered first, and then the separation processes (unit operations). To accomplish this, the text is divided into two main parts.

PART 1: Transport Processes: Momentum, Heat, and Mass

This part, dealing with fundamental principles, includes the following chapters: 1. Introduction to Engineering Principles and Units; 2. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Overall Balances; 3. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Applications; 4. Principles of Steady-State Heat Transfer; 5. Principles of Unsteady-State Heat Transfer; 6. Principles of Mass Transfer; and 7. Principles of Unsteady-State and Convective Mass Transfer.

PART 2: Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations)

This part, dealing with applications, covers the following separation processes: 8. Evaporation; 9. Drying of Process Materials; 10. Stage and Continuous Gas-Liquid Separation

Processes (humidification, absorption); 11. Vapor-Liquid Separation Processes (distillation); 12. Liquid-Liquid and Fluid-Solid Separation Processes (adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, leaching, crystallization); 13. Membrane Separation Processes (dialysis, gas separation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration); 14. Mechanical-Physical Separation Processes (filtration, settling, centrifugal separation, mechanical size reduction).

In Chapter 1 elementary principles of mathematical and graphical methods, laws of chemistry and physics, material balances, and heat balances are reviewed. Many readers, especially chemical engineers, may be familiar with most of these principles and may omit all or parts of this chapter.

A few topics, primarily those concerned with the processing of biological materials, may be omitted at the discretion of the reader or instructor; these include Sections 5.5, 6.4, 8.7, 9.11, and 9.12. Over 240 example or sample problems and over 550 homework problems on all topics are included in the text. Some of the homework problems involve biological systems, for those readers who are especially interested in that area.

This text may be used for a course of study following any of the following five suggested plans. In all plans, Chapter 1 may or may not be included.

1. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and separation processes. In this plan, most of the entire text, covering the principles of the transport processes in Part 1 and the separation processes in Part 2, is covered. This plan would be applicable primarily to chemical engineering as well as to other process-engineering fields in a one-and-one-half-year course of study at the junior and/or senior level.

2. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and selected separation processes. Only the elementary sections of Part 1 (the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are covered, plus selected separation-processes topics in Part 2 applicable to a particular field, in a two-semester or three-quarter course. Students in environmental engineering, food process engineering, and process metallurgy could follow this plan.

3. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass. The purpose of this plan in a two-quarter or two-semester course is to obtain a basic understanding of the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. This involves studying sections of the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 in Part 1—and omitting Part 2, the applied chapters on separation processes.

4. Study of separations processes. If the reader has had courses in the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass, Chapters 2-7 can be omitted and only the separation processes chapters in Part 2 studied in a one-semester or two-quarter course. This plan could be used by chemical and certain other engineers.

5. Study of mass transfer. For those such as chemical or mechanical engineers who have had momentum and heat transfer, or those who desire only a background in mass transfer in a one-quarter or one-semester course, Chapters 6, 7, and 10 would be covered. Chapters 9, 11, 12, and 13 might be covered optionally, depending on the needs of the reader.

Different schools and instructors differ on the use of computers in engineering courses. All of the equations and homework problems in this text can be solved by using ordinary hand-held computers. However, more complicated problems involving numerical integration, finite-difference calculations, steady- and unsteady-state two-dimensional diffusion and conduction, and so on, can easily be solved with a computer using spreadsheets. Almost all undergraduate students are proficient in their use.

The SI (Systeme International d'Unites) system of units has been adopted by the scientific community. Because of this, the SI system of units has been adopted in this text for use in the equations, example problems, and homework problems. However, the most important equations derived in the text are also given in a dual set of units, SI and English, when different. Many example and homework problems are also given using English units.

Good for separations techniques

The only review that I can give for the text would be for the separations sections, of which our class concentrated mainly on the distillation regime. Excellent structured pairing of chapter labeling with homework and example problems. Open-ended problems required a sufficient level of engineering skills.

Best Chemical Engineering Book I've Had

This book is by far the best and most thorough chemical engineering book we used at my university. Every chapter redefines variables it uses instead of you having to reference 8 chapters back to remember what a particular variable is. The book does a remarkable job of taking a very complicated subject and making it seem as easy as can it could possibly be. This book saved me in school and, as I said, is without a doubt the best text book we used during undergrad.

Great Overview Book for PE and Defense Exam Preparation

This book is a comprehensive overview of nuclear engineering topics. It is that ONE book if you must rely on just one. It is similar to the Glasstone book but newer and with better text. The explanations in the Reactor Physics and Kinetics chapters are great and easy to understand. I wish I'd had this book as an undergraduate; that Reactor Analysis course would have been much more understandable!

Currently reading this book. So far, it is a great introduction to Nuclear Engineering. As a health physicist with no formal NE education, it covers relevant topics in the nuclear industry. Although a bit dated, this version still conveys essential information for newcomers to reactor operations.

This is one of the few books that through college I actually liked. Not to say that I read it from cover to cover, but the parts I did to read were well put and not as dry as other textbooks out there. I'm keeping this one despite it costing me an arm and a leg.

Very helpful and practical

This book was very helpful in addressing specific "choices" husbands and wives have in marriage. Each chapter has a practical section and a crafted prayer that is very specific in addressing each issue discussed. My favorite chapter was on spiritual warfare and our clear power as believers to not only recognize it but pray out loud in rebuking our enemy satan. Each chapter also includes very helpful scripture references. I would recommend this book!

A very worthwhile read...

I played and loved Mass Effect 1 so much that I bought Mass Effect 2 for full price on the day it was released. I never pay full price. I absolutely loved Mass Effect 2 also, and never really felt like I was missing anything that happened between the two games. However that is basically where this comic falls in the timeline. Actually the events in this comic take place immediately after the events of the opening cut-scene in ME2, just to be precise.

A few people have argued that the Liara T'Soni of this comic does not really mesh with the Liara T'Soni of ME1. As someone who explored the romantic option with Liara in the first game though, I would have to disagree. Here is someone who fought from one end of the galaxy to the other by the side of Commander Shepard, someone who went through heck and back to defeat an overwhelming enemy, someone who fell in love and then lost that love.

What would you do if you found out that that enemy was trying to steal your loved ones remains for some unknown (probably nefarious) reason)? Would you go to any lengths necessary to prevent that from happening? THAT is the Liara T'Soni that we see in this book. And it fits in perfectly with the Liara that we see in ME2. In fact, if you plan on playing (or already have played) the Lair of the Shadow Broker this is a must read. It will really fill in some of the blanks and prepare you for that story.

Nice collectible for fans of the franchise, but doesn't really add much to the canon

I'm a big fan of Bioware's games, but after being thoroughly underwhelmed by David Gaider's debut novelization of the Dragon Age universe, I've largely gone back to my tried and true philosophy of avoiding game tie-ins. I've heard good things about the Mass Effect novels, though. Though skittish about trying this stuff again, I figured that this graphic novel would be a safe bet. I liked it for what it was (a brief aside for existing fans of the games), but I'm hard pressed to find anything else about it to compliment.

The story follows Dr. Liara T'Soni in the aftermath of the Normandy SR2's destruction at the hands of the Collectors. Desperate to find what has become of Commander Shepard, she journeys to the outpost of Omega and falls in with a shady Drell named Feron, whose allegiance seem to shift on the hour. Caught in the middle of a standoff between the elusive Shadow Broker, the human-supremacist organization Cerberus, and the sinister Collectors, Liara struggles to save Shepard's body from the murky schemes that have risen up around it.

This series of comics promises to tell the story hinted at by Liara in Mass Effect 2, and, well, it does that. That, and not much else. Liara meets Feron, throws around a lot of biotic bodyslams, and plucks Shepard from the clutches of the Collectors. To wit, she did everything she said she did in the few lines of dialogue on the subject from the game. I mean, that's not really a bad thing; I wanted that story, and I got it. I was just hoping there was a little bit more to it than that.

There is definitely some extra material in the suddenly saucy rendition of Liara, however. I feel like I shouldn't complain, since Liara has been my Shepard's nerdy blue girlfriend since the first game. However, Francia's art contorts Liara into a centerfold pose at every... literally, every... opportunity. Apparently, arching your back, thrusting your chest out, tilting your hips backward, spreading your legs, and looking over one shoulder is the natural and comfortable position one would take when recovering from a fall. Or being held by the arm. Or sitting in a chair. Or watching your ship being blown up. Or, you know, whenever. I understand that female characters being drawn for the male gaze is a pervasive issue in comics, and I realize that these panels aren't any more gratuitous than, say, the cornucopia of Miranda butt close-ups in the games. But Liara isn't really supposed to be a sexpot, at least in my interpretation of her character. Combined with the erratic behavior that I guess is meant to indicate her transition to the more streetwise Liara of the second game, this version of the character just didn't feel true.

If you take this one at face value, though, you'll enjoy it. It's not a shining example of the artform, and it's not going to have much appeal for those who aren't already fans. But it's a quick and diverting read, and a nice collectible for those who love the series.

The art doesn't exactly portray Liara well, but it is a good comic book indeed. The art is still pretty good, and as a fan of mass effect, I really liked how it matched the story line between mass effect 1 and 2. Moreover, the dark horse edition has all the volumes, so it was a plus!
