At last! A book that tells it like it is....

Real Rape, Real Pain is a must have for any individual working in the allied health professions or ministry. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer have blended the voices of real women on the journey of healing after being raped by their male partners. Between the stories which enable the reader to see how the stages of recovery occur differently with each survivor.

The last three chapters are a pure joy to read. The authors discuss reclaiming healthy sexuality, self-esteem and physical intimacy. Easteal and McOrmond-Plummer provide tips for secondary survivors, how to educate children and call churches to speak out against rape for what rape is: a sexual crime against an individual. This book is a must have for both a woman who is struggling with the aftermath of rape by her partner and those individuals who are courageous enough to sit with the woman on her journey.

REAL SUPPORT FOR WOMEN RAPED BY PARTNERS

Informative, passionate and supportive of women who've been raped by partners, hence the full title. Highly recommended for any woman who's been in this situation or anyone who wants to give support.

The emphasis is on the fact that rape by partners is often not seen as "real" rape, which is patently not true.

I got through about 1/4 of this book and gave it to my friend to read. I just couldn't make it through the entire thing without having terrible 'flashback' nightmares of my abuse. I'm just not ready yet...

Very good but for child serious about drawing

I got this book at the library for my 10 year old daughter to see if she would like if before purchasing it. She is talented and comes from artists on her father's side, but had a bad experience with her first Art teacher in a school setting. I was looking for something to spark her confidence and keep her interest high in at least independant and self explorative instruction for now.

She loved the book immediately. Because she had some formal class instruction this year she was able to recognize some of the exercises that she was required to do in class, so that background exposure helped her "get" this book right away. This is a great fundementals darwing book for kids, but it is an exersice with a you can do it attitude book which is what I wanted for my daughter at this time. Something she could read for herself, interpret for herself and try her own way and see what she gets without someone else trying to shape her ideas for her.

The book's attractively layed out for my 10 year old, but I think she will work with this slowly here and there at her own pace, and probably come back to it even more when she's older too. there are some drawing projects but they are not as extensive as the fundimental practices area.

For this reason I also bought her Lee Hammond's series on drawing life like animals for more go right to it and start drawing projects. She is spending more time with that now and I expect as she gets more and more into drawing she'll come back and forth to the therory and the practical fun stuff.

For a child who just wants to draw cool looking picts fast, you might be better off with the lee Ames draw 50 series. My 8 year old son loves these draw or trace books as what he produces looks great with no theory just draw.

excellent for adults, too

If you are an adult who never learned fundamentals of drawing, this book is great. It demystifies shading and perspective, in a way that no other book or instructor has been able to get through to me. The exercises are basic and easy to practice, with an economy of words. This book is also perfect for children.

I'm a high school art teacher and I recently saw this book at the local library. I'll soon be ordering it as a resource for my classroom because it's got a lot of good, basic information and an easy-to-understand format that's very similar to the way I introduce drawing techniques to my Art 1 students. I'm impressed!

Help for the hopeless

I had suffered from symptoms of panic disorder for nearly 20 years and NOBODY could identify what was going on. I joined a support group and learned about this book which was fairly new when I first read it. When I read the case study that was in the book I finally understood what had been going on with me. I made an appointment with a doctor who had talked to this support group and recommended the book. That was twenty two years ago. Once diagnosed and treated properly I've been able to lead a normal life pretty much free of symptoms. Unfortunately there are genetic links with this disorder and a few weeks ago my son now 29 had started having symptoms. I ordered a copy for him and got him an appointment with the Doctor who had helped me. The book is a little dated now but still very relevant and an excellent book still recommended highly by the National Anxiety Foundation.

over 20 books on Panic and anxiety disorders. This
book, in my opinion, was the best. BUY IT !!!

Isn't it Oshaughnessy - & Stadler?

I would recommend this product to everyone, as I believe its message is so important.
I don't like the way the 'other author?' - Stadler - is missing from this edition.
I very much like the way the information is presented to the reader and the content.

Lots of Information, Boring to Read

This is the book for my "Introduction to Electronic Mass Media" class. It is VERY boring to read. The professor seldom refers to it, maybe 3 or 4 times in class. However, there are some very good sections, that even though they aren't interesting, they are useful. An example is the 2 sections on semiotics. There is an entire chapter that can be used as a outline for a semiotic analysis, as well as an appendix in the back of the book about a semiotic analysis, with pictures.
One thing that really stands out when you think of books that are used as college textbooks, this one doesn't have vocab words. Though a lot of students hate vocab because it is one more thing for the prof to put on the test, I think that it would be useful in this book because there are a lot of terms (i.e. semiotics, gender codes, etc.) that can be summed up in a sentence or two, so that the student will have a better understand and will be about to follow. It would also be nice to have the terms bold-faced for studying.
There is a lot of information in this book, but it is one of those books that you either have to be really into media or you have to force yourself to read.

From the beginning this book pulled you in. THE stories was great, the book was written Well and the characters were unforgettable. I wasn't able to put it down, because Ulysses wanted to know What would happen next. There were moments when I cried , screamed and even gasped for air.. Lol!.the balance of religion, family, and work makes the book that more personal and it gave me a sense of reality. After the tragedy after tragedy in the book it makes you reevaluate life and what makes it important to keep you going. I'm looking forward to read more from Nasheed. MAY Allah continue to bless your craft ameen.. Make sure you get yourself a copy... you won't be disappointed..

In The Russian Notebooks, Igort investigates the murder of award-winning journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkoyskaya. Anna spoke out frequently against the Second Chechen War, criticizing Vladimir Putin. For her work, she was detained, poisoned, and ultimately murdered. Igort follows in her tracks, detailing Anna’s assassination and the stories of abuse, murder, abduction, and torture that Russia was so desperate to censor. In The Ukrainian Notebooks, Igort reaches further back in history and illustrates the events of the 1932 Holodomor. Little known outside of the Ukraine, the Holodomor was a government-sanctioned famine, a peacetime atrocity during Stalin’s rule that killed anywhere from 1.8 to twelve million ethnic Ukrainians. Told through interviews with the people who lived through it, Igort paints a harrowing picture of hunger and cruelty under Soviet rule.

Having lived in Ukraine for two years have having heard many stories about that time in history, I appreciated the style of story telling and the honesty of the story. The book is a slightly graphic but a sincere viewpoint of that time in Ukrainian and Russian history.

This is really two books in one. I had a rough start with this work but it got better as I continued reading. The book is presented as a journal in the format of a graphic novel. I think the editor is right to say this work will go down in history with other graphic journalists work. In this review I will look at book one, “The Ukrainian Notebooks” and part two, “The Russian Notebooks” respectively.
Since this is a “journal” it was a bit frustrating for me at the beginning of the book one to see the author starts focusing on one’s person life or something that happened only to move on prematurely to another subject that left the readers hanging. But when the book really starts with the interviews of older Ukrainians to get their account of living through the Cold War the book gets really good. Book one tells the incredible and almost unbelievable suffering of Ukraine during the Ukrainian famine of 1932 and life subsequently after that horrific experience. People died from starvation and survivors pursued drastic means of survival including eating roots, cannibalism and digging up dead people from the grave. The biggest part of this tragedy was the fact that much of it was the result of Communist Russia’s economic policies; it was largely a man-made phenomenon. This is a story that people today need to hear especially in Russia and the Ukraine where some have started to idealize “the glory days” of the USSR. I was quite sadden to read the various accounts of the effects of Stalin’s war on the peasants. I know the term “never again” is often associated with the Holocaust but I think it is just as applicable to Soviet economic ideologies.
Book two of the book is titled “The Russian Notebooks” and tells us of events more contemporary. It focused mainly on the work of the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya whose work was controversial and was mysteriously murdered on October 7th, 2006 in Moscow. The author starts out with an account of her murder and moves backward to her work for human rights and justice that led her to expose the Russian atrocities during the war against Chechnya. Like book one, “The Russian Notebooks” also tells stories of horrific evil against innocent people. The brutality will be more shocking for readers since it is more recent and no doubt some might think we have progressed from the method of warfares in the past. It is not so much that war is terrible that the book gives an account of; it is the fact that systematic human rights violations were committed by the Russian military against civilians that the authorities knew were innocent. Anna’s journalism vetted through various sources including survivors and Russian soldiers with guilty consciences. The book also touches a little on the recent Ukrainian conflict today.
Why is this book important? I think it is to wake people up from their apathy of the evils that are still ongoing but also for justice. There is a role of global public opinion that speaks out against what is evil and while some wrongs won’t be right on this side of eternity it is hoped the global community speaking out against what is wrong might restrain future evils committed. On a more personal note I’ve had the opportunity when I was younger to have trained with the Russian military and also the Ukrainian military. It is saddening to read this book in light of those experiences.
I also want to note minor editorial issues that perhaps might be helpful for future editions: On page 32 we see the author say “Ukraine has seen its share of famines in 1922…” but then page 33 talks about the 1932-33 famine and the story before this page was also about the 1932 famine. Was this a typo? If not I think the author should explained why the sudden jump to 1922. On page 39 at the bottom of the page we read “A decisive tool in implementing this plan was the Secret police, a for-” then it just stopped. Something similar can be seen on page 46.
