Strongly recommended. To everyone. Particularly those who want to avoid fights.

Everyone who carries a firearm for self defense and everyone who is considering doing so should buy and study this book. It covers everything - mindset and and history, sociology and responsibility as well as equipment and training. It is well written and reflects decades of experience both as a peace officer and as a trainer of private citizens as well as peace officers. This book is specifically written for the private citizen.

I would also encourage those who oppose the concept of self defense to read it. We are all responsible for our own safety and that of those who depend on us. Pretending someone else will protect you doesn't make it so. This book will give you some perspective, whether you eventually change your mind or not. Not everyone should carry a gun, but everyone should know about the world around them and how to safely handle a firearm should they encounter one.

The title might be a little misleading those who don't know Tom and his work. It is not about street fighting or bar brawling, but about avoiding fights if possible and winning them if they are unavoidable. It is as appropriate for a 90 year old woman as a 21 year old man.

The kindle edition is the most expensive I have bought, presumably because of the color plates. Unfortunately the initial download has a big red X where most of the plates should be. Presumably Amazon will push out a fixed edition. For now, I would recommend the hard copy.

Workmanlike but not world-shaking.

This book is a decent overview of defensive shooting, but nothing unique or world-shaking. It would be an OK start for a novice. The printed book is oddly formatted, I suspect it might read better on a Kindle

If you only own ONE self-defense/defensive weaponcraft textbook, THIS should be it.

I have read the earlier editions of this book, and this edition is the most up-to-date, and is made up of material and advice that truly, "works." Tom's curriculum has allowed AT LEAST 62 people (to date May 2015) to save their own lives or the lives of others, in self defense situations. His record is unparalleled in civilian circles. This book trims down time tested knowledge and techniques into everything you need, and nothing you don't. I can't think of a better definitive textbook that will get you up to speed to deal with a self-defense scenario. This should be required reading for all civilians that carry a pistol for self-defense.

Inter-American Relations And Encounters: Recent Directions in the Literature

Kyle Longley adopts the interaction between the two types of birds as a metaphor for the relationship between the United States and another small Central American country, Costa Rica. Like the sparrow, such countries rely on evasion and manipulation in their dealings with the hawkish powers of the world. Longley develops his thesis by using U.S.--Costa Rican relations during the period from 1942 to 1957 as a case study.

Basing his arguments on voluminous printed and manuscript sources, including documents from Costa Rica's Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, Longley begins by reviewing the relationship during the administration of President Rafael Calderon (1940-1944), who proved a cooperative ally during World War II. Calderon's close ties with the Communist Party (the Vanguardia Popular) aroused little concern during the war. But U.S. officials became alarmed when his successor, Teodoro Picado (1944-1948), although staunchly pro-United States, failed to distance himself from a connection that was viewed with increasing disfavor. As a result, when Picado attempted to impose Calderon as his successor in 1948 and ignited the revolution led by Jose Figueres, the U.S. government favored the rebels despite reservations about Figueres.

With the triumph of the revolution, Figueres headed a junta that gave way in 1949 to the presidency of Otilio Ulate. In 1953 Figueres himself was elected president. Figueres and his associates (who formed the Partido Liberacion Nacional in 1951) undertook policies displeasing to Washington, such as nationalizing the banking system and negotiating a more favorable contract with the United Fruit Company. What most alarmed U.S. officials was Figueres's material and moral support for the Caribbean Legion, which was dedicated to the ouster of dictators in the region. Figueres did not waver, however, and criticized U.S. support for the dictators, going so far as to boycott the 1954 inter-American meeting because it was held in Caracas, where President Marcos Perez Jimenez held sway.

Longley shows that Figueres pursued a nationalist agenda and at times defied Washington while retaining U.S. support when regimes that threatened U.S. hegemony (like those ruling Guatemala and Iran) faced extinction. Longley attributes Figueres's success to several factors, but above all to his anticommunist posture and to his preference for accommodation rather than confrontation. Figueres and the PLN also benefited from Costa Rica's favorable image in the United States and from a network of sympathizers, such as Adolf Berle and liberal members of the U.S. Congress. Longley might have undertaken a more extended comparison of the Costa Rican case with that of Guatemala, or better yet, with that of Bolivia, whose 1952 revolution also received benevolent treatment and substantial economic assistance from the United States. Cole Blasier's study of U.S. responses to twentieth-century revolutions in Latin America, The Hovering Giant (1985), pointed out the essential moderation of Victor Paz Estenssoro and other B olivian leaders and their skill in cultivating advocates in Washington.

In the conclusion to The Sparrow and the Hawk, Longley generalizes beyond the Costa Rican case to that of small countries in their dealings with major powers. Adapting the thesis of James Scott's Weapons of the Weak: Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance (1985), Longley argues that subordinate states, like peasants, can devise nonviolent strategies that enable them to shape their relations with the United States. Thus Longley, like Gambone, aligns himself firmly with those who assign agency to peripheral states.

Longley is able to explain how Figueres's policies sought the well-being of the people, without employing extreme capitalistic or socialistic measures. It explains how Jose Figueres was able to flirt with socialism and capitalism, but at the same time he knew both extremes were bad. Figueres's tactis enabled him to calm the F.B.I and the C.I.A., in times were the common enemy was communism. Start with the Book!

Missing manual? What manual? I’m an experienced computer user since the days of DOS, and have made my way through all the iterations of Windows since version 3.0. I recently purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and had my first introduction to Windows 8.1. There was certainly no documentation with the computer that gave any clue to navigating the new user interface, it took me several days to begin to use the computer in a productive manner, learning by trial and error. And there were more errors in the beginning for sure.

But this review isn’t on Windows 8.1, it’s on the missing manual. And this book by David Pogue is comprehensive (932 pages) and well written. It even has an index of 32 pages. For most users the biggest hurdle in dealing with the new operating system is the tiled interface. This book explains the reasons for and the use of the tiled “tablet” interface, and explains the gestures need to utilize the new interface with ease.

One of the biggest complaints that users have about any operating system is their frustration with the myriad ways to complete a particular action. David Pogue charts a middle course, he doesn’t list every way, but he tends to show how to complete the action with the mouse, with the keyboard, and if applicable, with touch. He also touches (sorry) on using Windows 8.1 in much the same way that Windows 7 is used, which will be the most common choice of those who work with programs such as Word, Excel, and Photoshop. He covers the “touch” interface which is likely to be used most commonly in tablets and some touch-enabled laptops. As is usual with David, his descriptions and explanations are clear and unambiguous.

I think this book is a must have for those who wish to understand the features of and utilize in full the productivity of Windows 8.1. Highly recommended.

Well written and very helpful

I just bought a new ASUS Transformer that is running Win 8.1. Coming from a laptop with Win 7, I needed considerable hand holding in order find my way around 8.1. After reading the reviews (something I really appreciate with Amazon) I decided to try this book. It not only looked like it had what I needed, but it was also available as an eBook. I got it instantly on my Fire 7HD and was able use it right at my side as I wandered through my new ASUS. I am impressed with the overall coverage which seems to me to be written in a rather 'middle of the road' manner. This is, not too simplistic, but also not too technical. The author has included small side notes on either side if the main text that will explain some things in a simpler manner for those with limited experience as well as side notes for those who would appreciate more technical details. I have just read the first four chapters, but have found them very helpful in understanding how 8.1 works as well as some very handy tips and shortcuts. I am looking forward to reading through the entire book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is migrating to Win 8.1. Incidentally, I have found it extremely handy to have it as an eBook at my side on my Fire while using the Transformer.

Dealing with TileWorld

I don't particularly like the new and controversial Windows "TileWorld" and I guess I'm not alone. Win 8.1 reflects certain concessions to user feedback and that is good.

The "missing manual" books are solid values. I have bought and reviewed several. David Pogue, an experienced and enthusiastic writer, is fun to read online and this book is as good and as lively as expected.

Consider buying this book *before* actually having to confront Windows 8+ for the first time. Yes, you will end up with this excellent 900 page reference (with index) on your shelf or in your e-reader but it would also be a great companion for those first moments and hours with the new operating system. Pogue starts his first chapters almost as if had that precise scenario in mind.
