Invaluable Guide to Raising Funding for Your Business

Simon Acland has produced a very readable, yet detailed introduction to the process of raising funding for your business, and the implications thereof. With clever wit, he entertains just enough to keep you fully engaged while you become acquainted with both the basics and the more obscure details of venture funding.
My immediate criticism of the book is that it was not available when I needed it most! Eleven years ago, I found myself unexpectedly thrust into the CEO role of a high-tech company with headquarters in the UK and operations in the US. The company, having gone through three rounds of venture capital, was now sorely in need of a fourth. I was an absolute novice, never having been reponsible for raising funding, and only through the immense help provided by my board members were we, in fact, successful. What a difference this book would have made in getting me up to speed!
In addition to laying out the mechanics of the funding process, Mr. Acland provides helpful suggestions at each step, even down to what to say and what to not say. He is very clear in detailing how equity is often diluted for the entrepreneur and investors alike, as successive rounds are required. What's more, by revealing how VC firms compensate their teams, the motivations, dynamics and personal agendae come into focus. You'll appreciate fully what's in it for each firm you meet, and how best to present your case in a way that serves their needs.
While a bit more arcane, the various warrants, terms, and rights are a central part of a funding agreement, and these are covered in detail. While complex and slow reading at times, one must think like a lawyer and grapple with these terms and conditions (Who ever heard of "drag-along rights" anyway?) to fully appreciate how a seemingly good deal may in fact be a death sentence for the entrepreneur or for investors in earlier rounds.
You'll find this a reasonably easy read given the complexity of the topics covered, and it is chock full of examples. On the off chance that you are raising funding for a firm doing business in both Europe/UK and the US or Canada, you will find it espcially helpful as the author compares and contrasts the processes and terminology employed on both continents. I would love to have had this book in my briefcase as I traipsed around London visiting 14 firms seeking funding- I might have actually understood what I was doing!
If you are interested in the topic, and especially if you are actively pursuing funding for your business, very simply, you MUST buy this book. Should the need ever arise for me to raise venture capital again, I can assure you this will be my first reference on the topic.

Dollars and Sense

This is three books in one - first a supportive and practical advice book for entrepreneurs thinking about raising capital. Second a VC insiders book letting you understand their motivations and goals, and third an entertaining, slightly irreverent, and many time humorous book that gets you through an essentially and necessarily complex subject. Needless to say I found it excellent value from the author, Simon Acland. The story is told from both sides of the table so the entrepreneur doesn't raise money for the wrong reasons but also has a chance to play the game on a level playing field by understanding the other (VC) team. In some ways like having a former IRS agent help you complete your annual tax return.
This isn't just another empty suit of a 'How To' book or yet one more 'The Ten Most Important Things......' thin veneer of a title in the business section. Simon Acland provides substantive and reliable advice for every step of the way as an entrepreneur seeks to grow his or her business with the help of outside capital - but not giving too much of the business ownership away. It's like listening to a Progressive turned Conservative and learning all the clever tactics once used to make something sound quite palatable only to induce you to do something quite stupid. Not only does the author use humor to speed the journey but he also demonstrates oodles of empathy for the entrepreneur. Simon feels like a personal advisor rather than a business school lecturer.
And don't let the UK experience bias of the author imply dilution of value to the US reader. Simon's bio indicates plenty of UK/US fund raising experience and after all - Angels, Demons and Vultures tend to act the same way no matter where they fly.

An outstanding book

I have been an entrepreneur for over 20 years and have participated in raising Angel and Venture money on both sides of the pond.
Simon's book has allowed me to understand the dynamics from the investors perspective in a way that I never have done before. Prior to reading this book, I have always focused on my own reasons for raising money (market opportunity, growth, etc) vs. clearly understanding the rationale and motivations of the investors. The insights in this book have changed that dynamic for me.
This book also contains incredibly solid good business advice. The chapter on remuneration, shares, options and bonuses is worth the cost of the book just on its own.
Read this book is you are serious about growing your business - either organically, through Angel investors or by jumping in with the Vultures.
Oh, and by the way - this book is also very entertaining
