'When I was a little girl I believed what I was told over and over again: that I was evil, that I deserved to be tortured because I was the Devil's child ...' In April 2007 foster-mother Eunice Spry was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for her sadistic abuse of the children in her care. The details of her cruelty were so sickening they shocked the country. Alloma Gilbert was one of Spry's young victims, sent to live with her at the age of six and left at her mercy for eleven brutal years. Eunice used her own twisted religious beliefs as an excuse for punishing her foster children. When she took them to live on an isolated farmhouse, the abuse escalated to terrifying levels - a stick was thrust down Alloma's throat so often it was stained red with blood, she was starved for over a year and survived only by secretly eating pigswill, and the vicious beatings were relentless. At the age of seventeen she finally escaped but, alone in the outside world, she fell prey to abusive men. It was the birth of her baby daughter that saved her, that finally taught her what love really is. Written with powerful honesty, Deliver Me From Evil is a moving and inspiring story of survival.

Heartbreaking memoir
By Christina Czosek
I purchased this book for my Kindle and couldn't stop reading it. It was hard to keep reading sometimes, hearing about the cruelty that the children were subjected to and the emotional pain that the author suffered. But I couldn't put it down. It's heartbreaking that this is still happening, and I was surprised at how many people had suspected and reported the abuse, yet nothing was done for years. The only thing that made it easier to accept (if you can call it that) is knowing that she survived and her foster mother was punished, and learning that the author has used her awful experiences to ensure that her "mother" can never do this again.

so so sad
By IndyJen
I am so sad that this dear woman suffered so much for so long. I can only hope and pray she has found true joy and everlasting peace and has been able to heal. It's hard to read this book and consider what all these children endured. My prayers are with them all.

Amateurish writing but keeps very true to the author's voice
By Jessie
I was hesitant to buy this book, since I have never read this genre of book before, and also money is tight with Christmas looming only a few weeks away. However, I am really glad, after reading it, to know that my purchase helps support the author financially and also (hopefully) by validating the worth of her story.
Reading this book it was readily apparent that the author had not had much practice and is not well-read or educated (this, of course, is explained by the lack of education she had as a child, but as she writes she compensates with an intuitive intelligence). She starts the book off by saying that it was not intended to be entertainment so much as a way to speak out against her "foster mother" and child abuse, as well as to be a therapeutic and personally cathartic experience for her. And that is exactly what I found this book to be. In this case, telling the story as faithfully as she can is more important than well turned flowery sentences.
I found myself admiring her deep strength, not only as a survivor, but also as she described her desire to attack and beat her "foster mother" Eunice (I use quotations because she was not actually fostering in any way, or a mother in any sense of the word), in retaliation once she was finally grown and a match for Eunice physically, but instead she somehow had the strength of character not to stoop to Eunice's level. At the same time that I was admiring her for this I also have to admit I was disappointed- I wanted someone to shove that stick down Eunice's throat so badly, and I don't know if I could have resisted this urge like the author did if it had been me.
I found myself unable to put this book down, I was so desirous to get to the end and see Eunice finally get a deserving end that I actually read through the entire night instead of sleeping- something I haven't done in a long time. It was a chilling description of an extreme sadist allowed to have complete unaccountable care of multiple children. I believe that it was not an accident that she suffered such a great loss towards the end of the book (I'm trying hard to avoid spoilers here), but thats just my personal belief.
One thing I noticed about the author is that her psychological healing is not complete yet, and I would be interested to read her perspective on her parents choices and behavior as she matures and heals more. I believe she needs people to believe in so desperately that she is in denial about the fact that despite any lies Eunice told them, her parents chose to abandon their only daughter. It's heartbreaking and i can't imagine giving away one of my children like that and not even making absolute sure to stay in contact. They, ultimately, were the ones responsible for making sure their lovely daughter was well taken care of, especially in light of the fact that they retained their status legally as her guardian and Eunice never adopted her, or was even her foster care provider officially. Legally, this is part of the reason why the government was not monitoring the situation as closely as they should have been (not to let them off the hook- their failure, after multiple reports of suspected abuse, to investigate is simply criminal). If I had been her mom I would have camped out on Eunice's doorstep if necessary to find my child. I would have called the police.
Like other reviewers I am now very interested in reading her foster brother's perspective on their violent sadistic "foster mother". The author believes she took in children as a means of support financially, which I think is probably true, but I think she also took them in for a much more reprehensible reason: I think she actively planned this so she would have people to torture on a daily level. She most likely derived pleasure out of it in the same way that a pedophile kidnaps a child and keeps them long term for ongoing abuse.
I would definitely recommend this book- I think the author was afraid people might not believe her story, but it was very believable to me, and incredibly sad. It made me think a lot about how I could somehow help children in abusive situations like this, and I'm not really sure what the answer to that is, but i think that it's at least a really good thing if others read this and also ask themselves that question.
