Sacrifice of the Generals: Soviet Senior Officer Losses, 1939-1953, by Michael Parrish

The personnel loss of the Red Army is one of the most controversial aspects of Soviet military history, subject to exaggerations, statistical disagreements, and contemporary Russian politics. This massive biographical dictionary, the result of nearly twenty years of research, attempts to set the record straight with entries for nearly 1,000 senior soviet officers who were captured by the enemy, died of illness, were "repressed" by the Soviet leadership, or were killed in combat between 1939 and 1953. It is considerably enhanced by the use of the Soviet archives that have become available since 1990. Most essays contain extensive bibliographies and a preface contributes important contextual information on personnel organization and losses of the Soviet Army. John Erickson, the foremost Western historian of the Soviet armed forces, contributed a foreword.

Based on the latest declassified sources, this unique research tool greatly increases our understanding of the Soviet Union's mighty World War II effort and related Stalinist politics during its greatest hour. Parrish brings into one volume crucial information which was either not easily accessible in the west before or was widely scattered among many places.

Review
...nearly 1,000 entries are brought together on senior Soviet officers, who in the period 1939-1953 were either captured by the enemy, were repressed by Soviet leadership, were killed in combat, or died of illness. (International Review Of Social History, Vol. 52 (2007))

...the mass of biographical and bibliographic material that Parrish has gathered is of extraordinary utility....it is the most complete and accurate source yet available on high-ranking military and police officials. Any researcher on the Soviet army, intelligence services, or high politics should keep a copy close at hand. (The Russian Review)

Including all officers above the rank of colonel in his biographical dictionary, Parrish...relies on recently available Soviet archives in order to shed some light on the losses suffered by the Red Army officer corps from 1939 to the death of Stalin in 1953. Some 1000 entries provide basic biographical information for the officer corps and note the manner of death or other form of attrition, covering combat losses, political repression, war captivity, anti-Semitic campaigns, and reduction in rank. (Reference and Research Book News)

Encyclopedia of Soviet Generals who Died in 1939-1953
By Scott Manning
This book was not written by John Erickson as Amazon says, but he did write the forward before he died. The author of this lengthy, tedious work is Michael Parrish. Though Erickson is more commonly associated with the Eastern Front in World War II, Parrish is the right man for the job as he has written plenty books and articles on the Soviet military.

The book itself is really an encyclopedia. In order to determine how many Soviet generals died between 1939 and 1953, Parrish has actually researched each named general he could find. Each deceased name is listed alphabetically with rank, ethnicity, date of birth, date of death, branches of the military served along with dates, and of course, method of death. Some entries are more complete than others and the author went through great pains to even include schooling details where he was able to find it. Along with each entry, there are sources listed for those seeking more information.

Although the book is not a page turner, it does serve a purpose. Anyone researching a Soviet battle or a specific Soviet military leader who died during this time period will have a great reference guide to get the basic details along with a lead on finding out more. The book is especially useful to people like myself who do not have easy access to Russian archives and do not speak Russian.
