Great Book For Working in Times of Constant Change

I, similar to the authors, started my career in computers and technology when the industry was in its infancy. Having worked in several large corporations, I could also resonate with all the associated changes, examples, and impacts laid out in the book.

I liked the way the book approached the topic of all the changes that have occurred over the last few decades and the impacts it has had on corporate America and individuals within this ecosystem. It laid out numerous examples of activities that were imposed with good intentions but often resulted in inefficiencies and additional cost and time that perhaps could have been better spent elsewhere. It provided sound advice, not only on the implications of the changes, but also, included things to do so that one continues to learn, grow, and adapt during these disruptive times.

It was a great way to provide mentorship in a book. It’s a quick easy read, and I highly recommend it for individuals just starting their careers or anyone hoping to thrive in this environment of constant change.

Students, teachers, managers and leaders or those who want to be leaders in government, industry or any business will want to read this. You will have a better understanding of how and why leadership styles have changed over the past 60 years. not just a history or just identifying change, but why things have changed. I was often frustrated by various "models" adopted by businesses and pushed by academia in the 1970's through 2005. This book gives insight to why the frustration that managers and workers experienced, the impact of Political Correctness, the internet,and automation. A quick read that will invite you read it again, not just a theory, this is real experience over many years of many levels of management. I was there too and enjoyed some of the success and much of the pain, often close to the top leaders who drove and managed change through many pressurized situations driven by internal and external forces. Now, finally, the realization that you are on your own to grasp what you organization is about, to communicate that, to be the owner of your own fate. There is no loyal relationship supporting you, or anyone else.

About the Author
Peter Mathews has spent 30 years as a College and University Professor educating people. Born into a family of educators, his father was a university professor and clinical psychologist, and his mother, a teacher. At an early age, Mathews learned the value of human dignity and to cherish education. This has molded his beliefs about the role of government in the world today. Peter Mathews is a professor of Political Science at Cypress College, has taught at California State University, Fullerton, is currently a guest host on KPFK radio 90.7 FM and Political Analyst on KFI radio AM 640 Sunday Morning News. He has served as a Political Analyst on KNBC-TV, KCBS-TV, KTLA-TV, CNN radio, KTLK radio, KPFA and KPFK radio, and as a commentator on KNX News Radio and other venues. His columns have been published in the Long Beach area Press Telegram, online Orange County Register, and Random Lengths News. Having lived, traveled, taught and conducted research in 27 countries such as Britain, France, Denmark, Germany, Canada, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, India and elsewhere, Mathews has first-hand knowledge of public policy issues such as healthcare, education, economic development, and international relations, and environmental sustainability in these and other societies. Peter Mathews was the Democratic Party Nominee for the U.S. Congress in 1998 and ran a close race in the Long Beach based district. Peter Mathews moved to Los Angeles County in 1979 and has been a resident and homeowner in Long Beach for 21 years, where he lives with his wife Toya Baker-Mathews and daughter Page.

Remembering Who We Are

This book is potent. It demystifies the reasons behind an unresponsive dis-functional government and clearly outlines the path for fixing it. The reader is encouraged to participate and become part of the solutions; and the solutions are not that complicated. Peter Mathews brings politics back to life, and reminds us of what America is supposed to be: A land of opportunity and of community. He reminds us that WE are the government and WE, (all of us,) must take back control. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the world. We are Americans. We need to remember what that means, and begin once again, to act like it.
